DID YOU MISS US?!

✨ A HOUSE CALLED ZANZIBAR RETURNS ✨

..And we invite you back to the dance floor! OUR DANCE FLOOR!

THE MUSIC'S GOT US! 47 YEARS OF CLUB ZANZIBAR 🐅🪩

This time 47 years ago Club Zanzibar opened its doors in the back of the Lincoln Motel, starting what would become a home for black folk to let loose and dance all night! Some of your favorite icons like Sylvester, Chaka Khan, Phillis Hyman graced the stage and left all on the dance floor. And if you were lucky you caught the infamous tiger in the cage that night! 🐅🪩

The summer has been HOT & HEAVY! With ups, downs and turn arounds but THE MUSIC'S GOT US always!

Looking back at opening night, NO FACES 2024 I realize the exhibition was never just about hanging artwork.

It was about honoring the space we created together and the artists whose practices continue to shape and expand the language of Black abstraction.

No Faces was born from a desire to broaden the conversation around Black abstraction by honoring those whose contributions have too often been overlooked while creating space for contemporary artists carrying that lineage forward.

Watching people slow down, ask questions, and connect with the work reminded me that exhibitions can do more than present art. They can create dialogue, build community, and reshape how we understand history and possibility.

As I prepare for No Faces 2027, that purpose remains unchanged.

No Faces began with a belief that Black abstraction deserved to be seen in its full breadth, not as a footnote, but as an essential part of art history.

My mission has always been to expand the visibility of Black abstract artists while honoring the many ways abstraction holds philosophy, memory, spirituality, identity, and experimentation.

As I begin planning No Faces 2027, I’m reflecting on the artists who trusted me with my first major curatorial project.

Today I’m celebrating @natou.studio @cedricmitchelldesign @sharonbarnes4702 Each brought a distinct visual language that helped shape what No Faces would become.

This is where the journey began.

Thank you to everyone who came out to experience The Things We Keep.
What stayed with me most was watching the work come alive through conversation. You could feel the energy shift as people spent time with the pieces, shared stories, asked questions, and connected with one another.

The artwork wasn’t just being viewed, it was speaking.
I’m grateful to the artists, Natou Fall, Hope Ngozi Okere, King Morelli, and everyone who helped make this exhibition possible. Thank you for bringing your presence, curiosity, and generosity into the space.#
The Things We Keep is about what we choose to carry forward, the objects, memories, lessons, and experiences that continue shaping who we are becoming.
As both curator and participating artist, I’m grateful to have been a part of this conversation.
Thank you.

Calling all Black Girls in LA who love art!

Saturday, join me and artists Natou Fall, Tiffany Conway, and Dellis Frank for a private walkthrough of sacred at Sovern LA, an intimate gathering bringing the Black Girls in Art Spaces LA community into direct connection with the exhibition and its artists. Beginning at 12:30 p.m., I will lead the group through the exhibition, and each artist will be on hand to speak about their work. RSVP via link in bio.

Featured artwork:
Tiffany Conway, The NO Painting, 2024, oil on canvas

A note on accessibility: Sovern LA is committed to creating a space that is welcoming and accessible to all. At this time, our building does not have ramps, which limits physical access for some community members. We recognize this as an area that needs improvement and are actively working toward making the space more accessible. We do our best to accommodate people of varying abilities. We encourage anyone with specific access needs to reach out before attending so we can best support you.
