Opening morning at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, lucky to hear Anne Enright speak with Caoilinn Hughes about her new essay collection, ATTENTION: WRITING ON LIFE, ART, AND THE WORLD. She was warm, funny, and straightforward, and @ericdanielweiner and I fell in love with her.

We’re in Edinburgh! Eric’s show, MY LIFE IS A SONNET, opens tomorrow night, 8:20 pm at The Space on the Mile in the Radisson Hotel.
Come see him! I’ll be there, of course.

Rereading 80s favorites: Anita Brookner’s HOTEL DU LAC won the Booker in 1984 and was published in the US by Pantheon in 1985 (when I happened to be a 23-year-old editorial assistant at RH with access to lots of fantastic free books). I adored the novel then (the fantasy of being packed off to a hotel in Switzerland to recover from a scandal and write), but I loved it even more this time. I understood it better. Love is complicated!
One of those quiet novels that somehow builds to a quiet gut punch you didn’t see coming.
I read two of Brookner’s other novels (PROVIDENCE and LOOK AT ME) and loved them too. But HOTEL DU LAC reigns supreme.

I forgot to add one of my favorite Hospital of Emotions rooms! As seen here. I think this emotion was Compassion?

We went to the Hospital of Emotions. It’s in a real hospital! The staff all dress as doctors and nurses and each room is created by a different artist.
If you’re in LA you should go! It’s cool.
Here are some of the emotions we experienced.
(Writers: Yes, the room covered with book pages is in the Sadness Ward.)

At the Yoko Ono show at the Broad Museum in LA with lovely, funny @lesliemargolisbooks . This is Painting to Shake Hands, 1961. We also tried out Bag Piece (1964) but were too busy dancing in our stretchy black bags to take a picture. by @natstandiford

The Hollywood Fringe (@hollywoodfringe) has started and it's been such a joy to see so many friendly faces there.

The first photo is of course with my wife Natalie @natstandiford, still smiling after seeing the show for the umpteenth time.

The second image is with my son’s brilliant director and writing partner @danrobb11 and his girlfriend Julia. Daniel and Zach’s hysterical comedy, BAD SHABBOS, streams on Netflix.

And the third is with the brilliant Teri Weiss, who was my boss on Dora the Explorer and who is now an exec at Dreamworks, who came to the opening show.

Excited to see more of you over coming shows! Let me know if you're coming to any.
