On this day in 1959, “Sunrise at Campobello” had its final performance at The National Theatre. "Sunrise” tells the story of Franklin Delano Roosevelt first experiencing paralysis on a trip to his family’s summer home, years before his presidency. The play ends at the 1924 Democratic Convention – the event that launched his political career. When FDR was elected, he became the first and only visibly disabled President in American history.

Though FDR often felt he had to hide his mobility aid, it made the future he saw for himself possible. He was a frequent visitor to The National Theatre, thanks in part to adjustments made to the presidential box to accommodate his wheelchair. In the 1990s, disability rights activists successfully advocated for his DC memorial to be accessible and include a statue of FDR using his wheelchair.

Blow out the candles and celebrate Pride Month! “The Boys in the Band” visited The National Theatre on June 30, 1969, after a hugely successful Broadway run. Inspired by playwright Mart Crowley’s experiences in NYC, sharp humor and its immediate consequences are the name of the game for this cast of nine (mostly gay) men who gather for a Manhattan birthday party.

Premiering in DC two days after the Stonewall Inn riot, “The Boys in the Band” was part of pivotal moment in the fight for queer liberation. “‘Boys’ offers a rollicking voyeur’s-eye-view of what happens when a ‘straight’...Georgetown grad is thrown into a hive of seven buzzing queen bees,” wrote Ike Ridley of The Washington Afro-American. The play was unique at the time for its honest portrayal of gay men in America.

Like women at the turn of the last century, children’s voices are not heard in our decision-making in this country. In a partnership with @suffsmusical @nattheatredc , I joined pediatrician researchers and advocates Dr Nate Kupperman, Dr Sarah Hoffman, and Dr Ramon Gist to raise awareness on the challenges to children’s health, including their mental health, Medicaid cuts, vaccine hesitancy, gun-related deaths and the threats to research that is the hope for ending diseases before they begin. We also spent the day meeting with law makers, including @senatorandykim re: Medicaid reform for children’s health care. Honored to march with these pediatrician researchers and child advocates to raise the importance of prioritizing children, our future. #EraofTheChild #KeepMarching taken in The National Theatre DC by @nattheatredc

This Friday, we're flashing back to Curtis Blues's program in the Inpatient Psychiatry Ward at Children's National Hospital! Curtis led a celebration of Black music, inlcuding this take on Sonny Boy Williamson II's "Help Me," featuring a traditional New Orleans rhythm that combines Rumba with a blues beat.
