Sober October 2026: Gen Z is drinking less, but is that the whole story?

Only 50% of U.S. adults ages 18–34 say they drink, down from 58% in 2023. And 66% of young adults now say even moderate drinking is bad for your health. That's real progress for sober curious living.

But fewer drinks doesn't always mean sober. 69% of 18–24 year-olds say they prefer cannabis to alcohol, and for the first time, daily cannabis users outnumber daily drinkers in the U.S. Swapping one substance for another isn't sobriety.

This Sober October, don't swap the high. Find your natural high instead: music, movement, making things, nature, and your people. Those are healthy alternatives that boost your mental health long after October ends.

Red Ribbon Week is all about living drug-free, and Sober October is about more than skipping drinks for 31 days. Both come down to finding what actually lifts you up, no bottle, vape or pill required.

Maybe it’s turning your favorite song all the way up. A long run with nowhere to be. Getting lost in a sketchbook. Catching the sunrise at the top of a hike. Or laughing till it hurts with your people.

These are the highs that stick around long after October ends. That’s what being sober beyond October looks like.

Supporting a young person isn’t about having the perfect thing to say. It’s about being someone they can count on — consistently, without conditions.

It’s creating space for honest conversations, without jumping straight to judgment or a lecture. It’s listening first. It’s encouraging healthy outlets, real connection, and goals worth working toward.
