On Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the original stewards of our lands and waters—Indigenous communities who have cared for nature since time immemorial.

In Texas, TNC is grateful to collaborate with Native partners like the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. Together, we're using prescribed fire to restore the longleaf pine tree, which, in turn, supports cultural traditions like basket weaving.

Fun fact: In 1993, we teamed up with @texasparkswildlife to purchase 7,000 acres to add to the 483-acre Caddo Lake State Park, creating the Caddo Lake Wildlife Management Area. With a maze of slow-moving bayous and wetlands that cover about 26,810 acres of cypress swamp, Caddo Lake is a place like no other.

What makes the perfect pairing? Bats and agave! Mexican long-nosed bats feed on agave nectar, a critical food source, and in turn, help pollinate the plant. Link in bio to read a new Cool Green Science Q&A with Dr. Kristen Lear (@batsforlife_kristen) of @BatConservationInternational.

Learn about the organization's work to support agave restoration and track the bats through environmental DNA as they migrate. The work has taken Dr. Lear to TNC's Marathon Grasslands Preserve in West Texas, where her team has collected agave seeds to fuel local restoration efforts.

For 40+ years, we’ve worked with landowners, agencies, and communities to help conserve some of the most ecologically significant and least fragmented landscapes in West Texas, including Big Bend National Park and the Black Gap Wildlife Management Area.

Science shows that border walls and associated infrastructure can disrupt wildlife movement, fragment intact desert and mountain systems—irreversibly altering these incredible landscapes.

CBP is accepting public comments through August 31 on the proposed border infrastructure project and its potential impacts on the environment, cultural resources, and local economies. The most effective comments are specific and fact-based. In addition to reaching out to your local elected officials, you can email BigBendComments@cbp.dhs.gov (Subject: Big Bend Vehicle Border Barrier System Construction) and call (833) 412-2056.
