"In nature, everybody's an influencer."

Nature photography can be a powerful tool for celebrating the wonder of our natural world, but it can also be very damaging if we are not thoughtful in how we do it.

That's why we founded NatureFirst.org, a movement dedicated to promoting responsible nature photography. We've created as set of principles that help reduce our impact and ensure that our photography benefits the well being of our wild places.

Long time Nature First member @hikingbob_co (Bob Falcone) shared an article he wrote for the @sixty35media News Magazine website based out of Colorado Springs, CO USA. Some great info here that applies to all nature photographers. Thanks Bob!

In it he says "It’s not uncommon for big horn sheep (the official state animal) to wander into the Garden of the Gods, and they attract a lot of attention as people try to photograph them or get a closer look. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has created viewing and photography guidelines for all wildlife and birds. It’s also advisable to abide by Leave No Trace Principles (specifically, principle #6, Respect Wildlife), and for photographers, Nature First wildlife photography principles."

Copy and paste the link below and share with your friends and associates. Be sure to like and follow for more!

IS NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY TOO BEAUTIFUL?

Interesting article I came across this afternoon. This was in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue of American Scientist. One novelist remarked that we as nature photographers are promoting "eco-porn" with overly lit and highly saturated and stylized images.

So are we helping out nature by showing only the beautiful scenes? Or would we be better off showing the ugly as well? Do our beautiful ethereal photos encourage environmental activism, or complacency? Does it say "no, no, it's ok, keep doing what you're doing, we still have this beautiful mountain (tree, lake, playa), you can go ahead and destroy the rest." Or does it show our audience why it's so important to advocate for nature, for the environment?

Near the end of the article it infers that maybe we could write more on our social media posts than a short comment or even title about the scene, animal, or plant. We as nature photographers (generally environmentally conscious) can write a short blurb about the photo's significance in the environment. "Nature photography would find a purpose uniting visual aesthetics with ecological explanation. Images of nature with commentary then could be in the service of preservation, bringing photographic art back to a classical program of being aesthetically “pleasing" and useful at the same time."

Sounds like an interesting concept. Definitely gives us something to think about. Would love to read your thoughts!

Can't stress this enough. Whether in California or elsewhere in the world, rare occurrences like this need to be respected. No photo or "gram" is worth destroying these sensitive ecosystems.

Nature still creates amazing art, even in the stillness of wintertime. Just take a look at these incredible ice structures made on frozen lakes!

It’s amazing what lies right beneath us ❄️
