With another potential coral bleaching event on the horizon for the western Indian Ocean, what steps can be taken to preserve the coral diversity that remains? Nature Seychelles is calling for the urgent establishment of coral biobanks, where living corals representing different species and genetic lineages can be saved and maintained. “We want the upcoming UN Biodiversity and Climate Change conferences to deliver concrete action and funding to save coral reefs,” says the organisation’s CEO Dr Nirmal Jivan Shah. See the full press release through the link in our bio.

What does it sound like when birds sing together? Listen to The Global Birdsong, an original Afro-electronic track created by @arinaitwe_ and @axelwildsound bringing the sounds of nature together in one global chorus to find out! Released in collaboration with Sounds Right, it features more than 100 bird songs and calls contributed by BirdLife Partners across the globe to create something truly special. The Global Birdsong also credits NATURE as an artist, meaning a portion of streaming royalties will help fund biodiversity conservation. We're proud to have played our part with the contribution of the Seychelles Magpie Robin call!

It’s currently nesting season for Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata), on Cousin Island Special Reserve. This island is one of the most important nesting sites for Hawksbills in the western Indian Ocean. It is a protected area, home only to the Nature Seychelles island team and seasonal volunteers, creating a safe haven for sea turtles that come ashore to nest. Female Hawksbills have been monitored here since 1970, making this conservation program one of the longest-running in the world.

Monday blues: George, the oldest Aldabra Giant Tortoise on Cousin Island Special Reserve, wandered into a nest that a Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) had dug and abandoned 😅. He seemed a bit put out, almost as if he were thinking, "Who left this here?" But instead of moving on, he settled in for hours. The nest was pretty shallow (check out the last pic for perspective) and he was perfectly fine. Just too comfortable to move. Sea turtles often prepare nests and then abandon them if they find them unsuitable.

Many shorebirds and waders we see in Seychelles are migratory. They spend the northern winter in Seychelles, then make their way back up to breed. Swipe through to meet some of our favourite regular visitors! There are other species that can be seen on their way through Seychelles in wetlands, marshes, mangroves, rocky shores, shallow seas, estuaries, and grassy open places, which are rich in invertebrate life. The theme for @worldmigratorybirdday 2026 is “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter!” This event highlights the importance of community science (or citizen science) in safeguarding migratory birds. Even small, regular observations add value. Learn more: https://www.worldmigratorybirdday.org/

Nest in a fallen tree trunk ✅

White-tailed tropicbirds nest directly on the ground in sheltered spots across Cousin Island Special Reserve as the island is free of rats and other predators. This could be the at the base of trees, in, under, or right next to decaying logs or the within cavities of fallen tree trunks.

Take your birdwatching to new heights this World Migratory Bird Day! 🐦🔎📈
Twice a year, millions of people around the world look to the skies to witness the wonder of bird migration. 🪽
But these incredible journeys are under threat: 45% of migratory bird species are in decline, with 1 in 9 threatened with extinction. ⚠️
Thankfully, we can all help this 10th October. Every bird we see, count and record helps build the knowledge needed to protect migratory birds and the habitats they depend on. 💪
So, get counting, share your sightings, and help us save our migratory birds. 🧮
Next year, make your observations count even more on May’s World Migratory Bird Day, with our Race to Save Birds challenge. 🏃‍
You can get sponsored for every bird you see and help fund our vital conservation work — find out more: in the link in our bio

The State of the World's Mangroves 2026 report released on October 1, 2026 by the Global Mangrove Alliance includes two entries on Nature Seychelles’ work: our Wetlands of Hope approach with @m_e_c_e_n_r involving private sector stewardship of Seychelles' wetlands and WETSAPP, the tool helping practitioners and others collect biodiversity data for wetland conservation.

In 2022, the Global Mangrove Alliance set three goals for 2030: halt mangrove loss, restore half of recent losses, and double the extent of mangroves under protection.

The 2026 report compiles the latest scientific findings and experiences from around the globe, giving us a clear picture of the current status of mangroves at the halfway mark. With contributions from over 190 people across more than 30 countries, this report serves as a valuable snapshot of the progress, challenges, and solutions that are shaping the future of mangrove conservation.

Aldabra giant tortoises are masters of the slow and steady lifestyle. This one is browsing and eating, and might rest later. After all, there’s really no reason to hurry when you call a tropical island home 😉 On Cousin Island Special Reserve, the tortoises tend to be most active in the morning, but as the day gets hot, they prefer to be in the shade of trees or immersed in the water and mud of the island’s marsh.

We were thrilled to host the Seychelles Robotics Team @teamseychellesfgc at the Sanctuary at Roche Caiman before they headed off to South Korea for the @f1rstglobal – an exhilarating Olympic-style robotics competition that brings together students from over 190 countries. This year’s theme, “Igniting Innovation,” challenges teams to design robots focused on wildfire prevention, mitigation, and recovery. While at the Sanctuary, Team Seychelles engaged in activities to connect the competition with local conservation efforts. They embarked on a nature scavenger hunt using our Wetlands of Hope ID guides, followed by an interactive discussion at the mangrove seedbank with our project manager, Corinne Julie. They learned about the importance of Seychelles' mangroves and got their hands dirty filling polypots with mud and potting 67 mangrove propagules and seeds. We’re cheering for the team and wishing them all the best in Incheon!

This Female Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) is having contractions and laying her eggs on Cousin Island Special Reserve. Adult females typically nest every two to four years, migrating to shallow coastal waters to mate with males before the start of the season. Females may mate with more than one male, and have the ability to store sperm to fertilise all the eggs in an entire season. In Seychelles, Hawksbills nest during the day. Females come ashore and use their back flippers to dig a deep hole in the sand for their eggs. They experience contractions that help them drop the eggs into the nest in batches of one to three, continuing this process until they have laid their entire clutch. The soft-shelled eggs, about the size of ping-pong balls, weigh between 25 and 30 grams each. In a single nesting season, a female may return to shore to nest two to six times with about two weeks in between, laying anywhere from 100 to 160 eggs per clutch, and sometimes up to 200 or more.
