Conservation in motion. 🐢🌿

The careful relocation of an Aldabra giant tortoise demonstrates how practical action, scientific understanding, and animal welfare come together in conservation.

Through field-based learning and institutional collaboration, JICAS and IOTA are helping translate conservation knowledge into action for the ancient giants of Seychelles.

Protecting wildlife begins with understanding its needs.

The ocean holds the data. Who gets to use it? 🌊
Climate resilience starts with ocean science.
At #IPRD2026, Professional Session 3: Oceanographic Science and Climate Resilience asks how Indo-Pacific nations can turn ocean science into policy and share ocean data. 👇

🎙️ Commodore Abhinav Barve, Commodore (Naval Oceanology and Meteorology), Naval Headquarters, New Delhi (Moderator).

🔹 Ms Karuna Rana, Founding Director, Big Ocean States Initiative (BOSI), Port Louis, Mauritius.

🔹 Ms Cheryl Rita Kaur, Fellow & Centre Head, Centre for Strait of Malacca (SoM), Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA), Malaysia.

#WorldUnseen2026

Some expeditions begin in a laboratory. Others begin at the edge of an ocean. 🌊🐢

Excited to begin my field expedition in Seychelles with @iotaseychelles , whose remarkable work protects Aldabra giant tortoises and uses rewilding to help restore island ecosystems.

It is a privilege to learn from Rich Baxter (@rich_in_nature ), IOTA’s Director and an inspiring island ecologist dedicated to tortoise conservation and ecosystem restoration.

Deeply grateful to @jicasjsy and its exceptional Director, Dr Sean Dettman, whose vision, encouragement and commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for students made this experience possible.

As an MSc student, I’m looking forward to taking my learning beyond the classroom and into the field. 🌿

Protect. Preserve. Rewild. Restore.

On my way back with 4 full bags I had a funny encounter. Someone called me over and asked if I work for the government probably thinking I get paid for cleaning the beach. I replied „No, that is just my private thing. I do it for free.“ a bit puzzled he responded „Ah, so it’s Free Service for Seychelles.“ Just the way he simply put it made me laugh.
