We’re kicking off Sydney Fringe by celebrating two years of songs and stories in Sydney. DOUBLE TAKE is our 20th show, and invites back three artists who have appeared at the series to share how they approach old songs with fresh ears. DOUBLE TAKE will feature DOBBY, Malaika Mfalme, & Saxon Penn.

DOBBY - @dobbyau
ARIA Award-winning artist DOBBY is a true force of nature, with his electrifying live performances leaving audiences spellbound. A rapper, drummer, composer, and producer, he brings an unmatched energy to the stage. Proudly identifying as Filipino and Murrawarri, DOBBY’s roots run deep in the Aboriginal lands of Brewarrina and Weilmoringle in New South Wales.

MALAIKA MFALME - @malaikangelking
London-born and raised across continents, Malaika Mfalme is a Tanzanian/Australian singer, songwriter, guitarist, and cultural producer creating on Gadigal Land (Sydney). In Swahili, their name translates to “Angel King.” Blending folk, soul, East African choral traditions, and immersive live looping, Malaika creates music rooted in Black love, grief, tenderness, and collective healing.

SAXON PENN - @saxonpennmusic
Saxon Penn writes songs where beauty and heartbreak share the same room. Drawing from the raw storytelling traditions of folk and country music. His sound blends fingerpicked guitar, banjo, and harmonica, moving between centuries-old ballads, talkin’ blues, and stark original songs that feel cut from the same cloth.

Acknowledged in Parliament.   For over 12 years Nauti Studios and our founder Nat Cheney have been transforming old industrial buildings into spaces for creativity, culture and community. We have transformed 5 warehouses over 3 premises; in Inner Sydney, the Inner West, and the Blue Mountains.  We open our industrial doors to a huge number of the public through events, workshops, and more. For example a recent market at Nauti Studios in Inner Sydney brought in approximately 2,000 people in a single week. 
But Nauti Studios is simultaneously something behind the scenes, something very important. Before a painting is hung in a gallery you go to or a musician takes the stage at a venue you attend, that work has to be made somewhere.  Nauti Studios Sydney is the workplace of over 40 artists and creatives in extremely diverse professions, from painters to glass artists, prop makers to musicians, robotic engineers to costume makers, and more. Over the past 12 years we’ve given work space to over 250 creatives, artists, freelancers, small business, entrepreneurs, academics, students, charities, and more.  Spaces like Nauti Studios are what allow creative people, to whom physical work space is essential, to live and work in places like Sydney. When renting a house/apartment with an extra room isn’t affordable, or conducive to mental health, connection, or networking, these creative spaces are the places which allow peoples’ ideas to be forged and brought into reality. They are hubs of culture and inspiration, and the reason a city stays vibrant, valuable and full of life, economically and culturally.  Kobi Shetty it has been a pleasure showing you our spaces and community, and we are honoured to have been acknowledged by you, and to know that you recognise and appreciate the impact we have on this city. I first saw this film when I was much younger, and one scene in particular stayed with me - Molly Ringwald’s character Andie transforming a second-hand dress into something completely her own for the prom.
🩷💗🩷
I remember a shift in my perception by that moment of reinvention, the idea that clothes could be taken apart, reimagined and given a new life.
That scene became a memorable influence on my own interest in fashion, making and upcycling, and it’s one of the main reasons I wanted to screen Pretty in Pink this month.
