Eight months ago, I started to pore through the immense collection of MAP, Museum of Art and Photography, Bangalore. The goal was to discover taking off points for reimagining incredible works of art through 10-12 minute short films. In due time, a series of seven appeared. Each one a universe of its own. Some narratives were fictional, some were inspired by real stories, some were reflections of real characters. Each of them was a distinct product of unsupervised imagination and yet a commonality appeared between them in the most curious of spaces. This series of seven will be shown at the ‘Art is life’ festival of MAP on the second of December in Bangalore and all of you are invited. #Unsupervised #Artislife #unboxingbangalore #mapbangalore

2 monsoons chasing Roen Olmi. Still not sure who's following whom.📖
💗Termitomyces sp., they call it in the science books. Roen Olmi, if you grew up in Goa. An unsure "collaborator", really, tangled into termite mounds, appearing only when the raingods and something unspoken all agree to let you in.

🧿One year of following her far enough and you're suddenly following everything around it. Who forages, who's allowed to. What's remembered, what's already been lost. Who owns the land the mounds sit on. What gets called "wild food," and by whom. Spiritual in some conversations. Political in others. Always social, always someone's story sitting underneath it. 🐲No story is ever just one story. Been taught by this fungus, how to sit with an entangled world and let it stay entangled, instead of flattening it into something simpler than it is 〰️🌊

Still simmering....🎞️📷
For today, a rava fry and a dry tawa fry with kokum exuding the sizzle, the smoke, and a tang which will cut right through it. Simple, easy, uncomplicated. taken in Goa, India by @naveedmulki

A message arrives like a dagger, in a sea of messages that were built like spoons. A WhatsApp reunion group of an old work place had messages that were only built for the warmth of nostalgia, the comfort of being momentarily huddled around a table. A particular table. In this case, a long white corporate office table at the radio station we all worked for, always playing in the background. I was a quiet witness then. I remain a quiet witness now. I scroll up and down, up and down, to see if I read the message right. A long lost friend has died. Suddenly, I am immersed in the one line that survived our every conversation for the last 16 years. ‘Mulki man! We will catch up soon.’

The last of those messages sat softly a couple of months ago. A conversation initiated by him. Always him. He was the wise man who found patience in my every impulsive whim, in my forever procrastination. And now he left me one last invitation with a mischievous grin. I could sense him teasing me from the underworld as I arrived to pay my final respects. As page after page of written regret began to appear.

A door was offered through the words of a profound voice that I had only met and been inspired by last year. A man who knew the answers to all my questions before I even set eyes upon him. A man restless in front of my camera, relaxed instantly behind his own. He simply said: ‘When you make yourself available instinctively, with mind, body, and soul, you present yourself and you connect with every inch of space, so the whole space, you become part of that space. And the rhythm that is beating inside you. The space also acquires that rhythm and begins to play with you and they create their own poetry and music. This is another ball game. It is not taking good pictures.’

It truly isn’t just about taking pictures. It is about offering ourselves to the world and the world offering itself right back to us. It is about being available to those who see us, those who love us.

Thank you Raghu Rai and Prabodh, for all that you will continue to be.

We’re back with the second edition of our storytelling workshop with Naveed Mulki and Pankaj Singh!💚

How does something fleeting stay? A line, a memory, a passing thought. And how does it begin to take shape as a story?

Three lines become four. A small shift, but something opens up. A rhythm, a direction, a possibility you hadn’t quite seen before.

This workshop sits right there, in that moment of expansion. Over two hours, Naveed and Pankaj will share how they work with fragments and follow them into fuller forms, how stories gather weight, and how they sometimes surprise you.

If you’ve been meaning to write, or simply to pay attention differently, this is a good place to begin.

A story...

Is in the telling.

What is ‘The telling’ all about?

Could it be...

Listening?

Or

Witnessing?

Submitting to chaos?

Or

Performing the wild dance of curiosity?

All of the above?

None of the above?

There are no answers here

Because we aren’t done asking.

Bring your blank pages...

To our storytelling workshop

My niece Zo asked me, with a seriousness that can only be held by a nine-year-old, ‘Chachu, what do you do?’
‘I am a writer, filmmaker.’ I replied.
She looks at me unimpressed & asks again.
‘Chachu, what do you really do?’

I am eavesdropping, eavesdropping all the time. The last I heard was ‘Sheila isn’t fit to be the president of (a not to be named) city club. To be fair to Sheila, she does the work, but what she lacks is a certain flair.’ I nodded despite not being part of the conversation, as these clubs never allow me to enter them in my Hawaii slippers. Zo asks me if this club is on a beach. I pretend I don’t hear her.

I am falling into rabbit holes. I slip my last fascination into Zo’s ears as she tries to educate me on the endless possibilities of a Labubu blind box. I tell her the boxes are cool, but has she heard about the Deccan traps. I tell her that volcanic eruptions once trapped softer layers like river beds under them. Even delicate dinosaur eggs turned into fossils & were preserved intact. ‘Isn’t it beautiful, Zo?’ I ask her. Gentle things safely preserved under hard fiery times. She ponders for a moment and says ‘Ya, it’s cool.’

I tell her that I get moved by an idea, & then the idea slips away. ‘Uhum, uhum,’ she notes. I tell her that it takes time to write, that I spend four hours being bored before writing a single line. ‘Uhum, uhum.’ That sometimes my expressions repeat themselves. ‘Uhum, uhum.’ That sometimes I take 17 years to write a book. ‘Uhum, uhum.’ That sometimes fellow artists give up on me because I have a backlog as long as the Labubu store queues. ‘Do you think I should get one blind box & one revealed?’ And then finally, there is a rare moment, where I write something, shoot something and it sings in perfect unison with how I see and feel the universe. ‘You know what I mean?’ I ask her. ‘Of course,’ she says. ’It’s like it is your birthday.’ ‘Are you telling me Zo, that I need to work like I am reborn every single day?’ I say excitedly. ‘You are weird, Chachu,’ she replies.

‘So yeah, I am a writer, filmmaker, Zo.’ I tell her.
‘You are on Google! And YouTube!’ she screams. I tell her she can be my 310th subscriber. #40 taken in Bangalore, India by @naveedmulki

I believe that we are all draped by invisible threads that somehow connect us to one another. From the shape of the moon to the limbs of the wind to the Russian roulette of stillness and madness that plays out within all of us. And our every moment of care or indifference or violence affects us all in forever unknowable but deeply profound ways.

The Mushroom Keepers starts with a moment that I hold dearly, where Kong Queency and Kong Mem intuitively break into a song that they create out of a whim. After the softest glance to the camera, their foraging begins. It takes a while for us to realise that they are directly addressing the mushrooms they wish to forage. This lyrical conversation, immersed in care and respect, catches us by surprise, it moves us greatly. It also offers the perfect door into a world that ebbs and flows, that is dire yet hopeful, that needs to change yet stay the same. This lightness makes room for all things heavy.

To me, it is a momentary glimpse of these invisible threads, wrapped all around us. All we really need to do is to listen and to let this mycelial world absorb us into its ways. #themushroomkeepers #meghalaya

‘The Mushroom Keepers’ will be shown at the opening weekend of the @alt.eff All living things festival on Dec 6th, 12 pm onwards @bicblr

This is how our stories begin.
A lot of nothing.
Some divine providence.
A rush of blood.
We see something,
feel something
know something
unknow everything.
Is ‘Unknow’ a word?
It can be.
Should be.
Must be.

Anyway,

Then it takes you,
a single step,
further than where you always stop.
A word turns into a sentence.
A sentence becomes,
a time, a place, a memory, the future,
Then,
everything.

Official Selection ALT EFF 2025 ✨
Indian Shorts

The Mushroom Keepers by Naveed Mulki (@fungifoundationindia @fungifoundation @naveedmulki)

In the forests of Meghalaya, fungi weave through the lives of the Khasi and Garo people. Through elders’ stories and foraging journeys, the film explores the erosion of ancestral knowledge alongside vanishing forests. Three doors open: a degraded landscape, a healer caught between traditions and modernity, and fading songs of belief shaped by changing seasons.
