HE REALLY ROWS.

Before he was the first American in space, Alan Shepard rowed for Navy. His class book at the Naval Academy, the 1945 Lucky Bag, said the New Englander liked sailing and skiing, and that “in lieu of the second, he rows on the varsity crew—and he is not just the coxswain either, he really rows.”

On May 20, 1944, Navy’s varsity eight raced Cornell, Columbia and MIT over two miles on Cayuga Lake, with “3, Alan Shepard” in the published lineup. Navy won in 10:43, four seconds ahead of MIT. His class graduated the next month, a year early, because of the war.

In May 1961, the day after Freedom 7, a Naval Academy crewmate told the Associated Press that Shepard, at less than 160 pounds, “looked like coxswain sitting in the wrong end of the boat.”
