HE REALLY ROWS. Before he was the first American in space, Alan Shepard rowed for Navy. His class book at the Naval Academy, the 1945 Lucky Bag, said the New Englander liked sailing and skiing, and that “in lieu of the second, he rows on the varsity crew—and he is not just the coxswain either, he really rows.” On May 20, 1944, Navy’s varsity eight raced Cornell, Columbia and MIT over two miles on Cayuga Lake, with “3, Alan Shepard” in the published lineup. Navy won in 10:43, four seconds ahead of MIT. His class graduated the next month, a year early, because of the war. In May 1961, the day after Freedom 7, a Naval Academy crewmate told the Associated Press that Shepard, at less than 160 pounds, “looked like coxswain sitting in the wrong end of the boat.” 📷 NASA. EIGHT FOR EIGHT. THEN ROME. For 36 years, the United States entered the Olympic eight and simply did not lose. From 1920 to 1956, eight Games, eight golds. No other nation has ever owned an Olympic event the way America owned this one. And here is the part that sounds invented. Every single one of those crews was a college team. Navy midshipmen in 1920. Yale in 1924. California three times. The Washington farm boys of 1936 who won gold in front of Hitler. California again in the austerity of 1948. Navy’s Great Eight against the Soviets in 1952. Yale in 1956. The rest of the world sent its best men. America sent its students, and its students never lost. Swipe for the full honor roll, every champion since 1900. Then came Rome, 1960. The streak was defended by Navy, the same academy that had started it forty years before. In the final, a crew of young Germans from a rowing club in Ratzeburg did what no boat on earth had done in four decades. They beat the Americans. The dynasty died on the Tiber that day, quietly, the way dynasties do. And what followed tells you what the streak was worth. In the 64 years since Rome, the United States has won the Olympic eight exactly twice, in 1964 and 2004. Eight golds in 36 years. Two in the 64 years after. Somewhere between then and now, the sport changed, the world caught up, and the age of the unbeatable college kids ended. But the board still reads the way it reads. Eight for eight. Every one of them students. Every stroke has a story. 🚣 Honor roll by Rowing Museum. Follow @rowingmuseum for rowing’s history, one story at a time. #usrowing #britishrowing #olympic #college #rowing

In the early 1902s, the Kent School was founded by Father Frederick Sill. He chose to build the fledgling institution on land by the Housatonic River because he planned for his boys to row, and he served as the first coach. Rowing – and its lessons – would serve as a critical part of his curriculum to form boys into men. What it is that rowing teaches? Anyone who has spent time in a shell learns quickly that the elegant photographs lied to them. From shore, rowing looks almost serene: long hulls cutting through silver water, oars feathering in unison, bodies moving with the grace of a metronome. It appears to be a sport of balance, rhythm, and collegiate beauty. Rowing is both beauty and pain. Rowing involves a level of physical suffering almost no other sport can compare with. Pain is not an interruption to rowing; pain is the medium in which rowing occurs. Most people act as the goal in life is to not suffer. We orient our lives to avoid pain. The goal is not pain avoidance. The goal is actually a good life. Even God suffers. It’s not a question of if you will hurt, or how much you will hurt, it’s a question of what you will do during the hurt and if you will let pain do its work in you. How will suffering shape you? How has it thus far? Pain can deform as easily as it can form. But endured faithfully, it can carve away vanity, deepen courage, widen compassion, and teach the soul to move in rhythm with the divine. Father Frederick Sill was right to build his school by the river. Perhaps more schools and more lives would benefit by orienting toward the river’s flow. @kentschoolboatclub *** Read full archive at the Atlantic Saints substack — link in bio. #atlanticsaints #style #beauty #goodness #learning #eastcoaststyle #architecture #gentlemen #rakish #styleinspiration #rowinglife #potomacboatclub #rowing #crew

Since High School, I’ve always had an aspiration to race at the Henley Royal Regatta. Today I get to realize that dream in a seemingly unlikely scenario, with the UK Armed Forces at the age of 33 in the Thames Challenge Cup while repping the USMC. There have been challenges in getting to this point, getting back into competitive rowing shape (and forgetting how to pace a 2k erg test!) while balancing learning to fly a new helicopter in a foreign military hasn’t been easy. Couple that with navigating fatherhood with a 1 and 3 year old and it’s been tricky, but I couldn’t have done it without the endless support of Dana thru every trial and tribulation. Now it’s time to race at maximum effort. Watch our race live at 2:10PM east coast time: https://www.youtube.com/live/5qbqrrcA4tk?is=Pd93dAzwJqfMf2Qj Thank you all!

🎓 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT 🎓 Next up we have Joe Bendik. Joe arrived at Kent this fall as a Post-Graduate through the Naval Foundation Program and has been a member of KSBC for 1 year. Joe’s favorite KSBC memories were winning at the Head of the Charles and also Clemson! In addition to rowing for KSBC, he spent 4 years rowing with Marin Rowing Association. He is from Petaluma, CA, and will attend the US Naval Academy, where he has committed to row (and join several Kent alums already part of the team, Head Coach Matt Fluhr '08, and future teammates Matt Wainwright '23 and Wyatt Campagna '24). Go Navy, Beat Army!
