Tonight we celebrate you, Mat Fieldes.

I don't actually remember meeting Mat. He was just always there - always a part of my NYC life - for forever. He was engrained in my family. It still feels wrong to use past tense, but Mat was my brother's very close friend and fellow music maker since their Julliard days, and he was my "other big brother" as he always called himself. There was never a doubt that Mat would have my back, protect me, celebrate me, keep me company, show up if needed. Never a doubt. He was part of the successes, joys, disappointments, breakups, and milestones. And he was a wonderful friend to my brother for decades. And this doesn't even mention the BRILLIANCE that was his talent. I'm just remembering now when Mat was one of the few folks I shared my own music with early on and he helped me arrange a couple pieces for an audition. He made my songs better in three minutes. The general consensus this evening was that he made every song better. And he made every group better. With his bass or without.

Mat has been living in his homeland of New Zealand for the past many years to be near his beautiful son, and not been physically present in the same way; so it has been easy this past month to not really believe you are gone. But tonight, amongst your friends and colleagues and admirers, in the basement of a Harlem bar full of exquisite musicians and artists, with your nearest and dearest... This was a room you were supposed to walk into. And the lack of you was palpable. And I really don't like it.

I love you and will feel the lack of you often, Mat. And the lack of your fantastic hugs. Thank you for being so good to a couple of Bassmans. ❤️

Coming back to social media to share that this weekend we celebrated the life of my father in law, Bill Hayden.

I vividly remember the first time I met him. He was all smiles welcoming me into their home for the first time - and made me feel like one of the family every day since. Although it took about a year and a half for this adventurous carnivore to grasp the concept that I don't eat meat ("but you eat chicken, right?" Is our favorite repeated quote), once it sunk in, he often sent me vegan and pescatarian recipes he thought we should try out.

He lived a full life. And he passed down his curiosity and adventurous spirit and desire to share his passions with his son, my Erik, and with my son as well. Thank you for that, Grandpa. We will miss you. ❤️

NEW POSTER, WHO DIS?

JANUARY 16 IS A VERY SPECIAL DAY: IT IS THE DAY MY INCREDIBLE SON WAS BORN!!!! (Also in Jan 16, The Strange Dark comes to a streaming platform near you.) While I celebrate my not-so-baby boy, I hope some of you will enjoy this film that we had so much fun making.

Delayed share but I felt the need to put some joy into the world today. December was full - chorus concerts, The Nutcracker, Chanukah, a wedding, Christmas, snow, friends, family, chosen family, an ice rink in grandparents backyard, cookies, more cookies, a moment of breath, a new year. The first week of 2026 has been a lot in the world, but I am aiming to bring joy (and people who bring me joy) (and cookies) into 2026 no matter what.
