We’re back with another HESIC Spotlight this week! 👀🌱

This time, we met with the Associate Director of HESIC, Scott Golem- another familiar face you may have seen around the Teaching and Research Greenhouses at the DJP campus! With over 14 years of experience spanning plant genetics, commercial cannabis cultivation, and academic research, Scott plays a pivotal role in driving sustainable agricultural technologies forward.

Keep watching to learn more about his journey and how students play a pivotal role in their operations ✨

As the Acting Director, Scott provides leadership across the HESIC team, operations, and facilities, including setting strategic direction, overseeing operational and project management, driving business development, and advancing funding strategies.

Scott oversees the daily operations of research facilities, including the controlled environment agriculture cannabis research facility and the research greenhouse and plant growth facility, which houses a header house, five individual research bays, vertical grow room, growth chamber, horticulture laboratory, and post-harvest laboratory.

As a former Master Grower and Plant Scientist for major cannabis companies, Scott has led numerous projects aimed at optimizing crop production and developing new cultivars.

We’ve got a great interview for you this week! 👀

Introducing our HESIC (Horticultural and Environmental Sciences Innovation Centre) Spotlight Series- first up with Research Lead and Part-Time Professor, Ashley Paling ✨

Chances are you may have spotted her around the Research Greenhouse as well as our Teaching Greenhouse at the DJP campus. Curious to learn about who she is and what she gets up to? Or perhaps you can see yourself working in a role like hers one day and want to get inspired? 🌱 Keep watching!

Before switching into the horticulture industry, Ashley studied and completed research in archaeology, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Near Eastern and Classical Archaeology from Wilfrid Laurier University, and a Master of Science in Archaeological Science from University College London, where she was trained in a variety of methods of scientific analysis of materials. During her master’s degree, one of Ashley’s specializations was archaeobotany, which prompted a career change into the horticulture and plant science industry!

She has since worked at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Sheridan Nurseries, as a Horticulture Program Supervisor at a retirement property in Kitchener, Ont., and with Georgian College as a Part-Time Instructor. Ashley graduated from the Horticulture Technician program at Niagara College in May 2023, and joined the School of Environment and Horticulture at Niagara College as a Part-Time Professor, teaching students in a variety of horticulture and greenhouse courses.

This month, we had the pleasure of welcoming a cohort of engineering students from Toyota Technological Institute in Japan to @niagaracollege as part of their customized training program.

Their experience included classroom learning followed by hands-on visits to our innovation centres, including WAMIC and HESIC.

Students explored everything from advanced manufacturing and engineering to agriculture and emerging technologies, while getting a behind-the-scenes look at how industry partnerships and applied research work in a Canadian college environment and heard directly from our students about the projects they’ve worked on with industry partners.

Thanks to the NC Global Customized Training team for the opportunity to be a part of this! by @ncinnovation
