North Crowley head coach Tommy Brakel breaks down one of the biggest shots in school history — the three that sent the Panthers to the state championship game.

With 17 seconds left against Duncanville, Brakel turned to Tyler Hastings, a senior guard who had played limited minutes all season, to step in and shoot two free throws. After missing both, Hastings stayed ready. Seconds later, the ball found him on the wing, and he buried the go-ahead three that ultimately sent North Crowley to San Antonio.

Brakel’s decision came down to trust. Hastings had earned it through the work he put in every day, and when the season came down to one possession, he delivered a moment North Crowley will never forget. by @ncpantherbb

For North Crowley head coach Tommy Brakel, sustained success isn’t about simply relying on what has worked in the past. Even after nearly three decades of winning, the Panthers continue looking for ways to raise the standard.

“We’ve won 29 games a year on average. We’ve went, on average, three, four rounds in the playoffs every year.”

With that kind of consistency, Brakel knows it would be easy for a program to become comfortable and assume the same formula will always be enough.

“I think sometimes it would be easy to rest on your laurels and say, you know what? What we’re doing is successful.”

But at North Crowley, the goal isn’t simply to remain good. Brakel believes maintaining an elite program requires constant evaluation, attention to detail and a willingness to make adjustments when necessary.

“If you want to be great, you always have to be sitting and evaluating what you do and assessing everything about your program.”

That doesn’t mean changing what North Crowley stands for. It means continuing to evolve without losing the foundation responsible for years of success.

For North Crowley head coach Tommy Brakel, sustained success starts with having pillars that never change — and for the Panthers, everything begins with putting in the work.

“We’re going to put in the work. We’re going to put in the time, whether it’s on the court, in the weight room, in the film room.”

That preparation is designed to make sure North Crowley is ready for every situation, but Brakel also wants his teams defined by how hard they compete and what they bring defensively.

“We want our guys to always feel prepared.”

Even with North Crowley’s offensive firepower, defense has remained one of the program’s calling cards — especially when the Panthers reach the biggest games of the season.

“Defense travels.”

Brakel knows shots won’t fall every night, but defensive effort is something his players can control every time they step on the floor.

“You can control your defensive effort and your defensive ability every game. Can’t always control whether that ball goes in the hole or not.” by @ncpantherbb

For North Crowley head coach Tommy Brakel, the Panthers’ state championship ring was designed to do more than celebrate a title — every detail helps tell the story of the journey.

“The six big stones represent the six playoff wins to get there.”

With the state championship played at the Alamodome, the top of the ring was designed to resemble an aerial view of the stadium. One side pays tribute to North Crowley, Crowley ISD and Fort Worth with the 817 area code and Fort Worth skyline, while players can customize the other side with their name, number and position.

“You can actually sit and open the ring up, and on the inside of the ring it has the Alamodome floor and the bleachers and everything else designed just like you were looking down on the Alamodome.”

Even the inside commemorates the championship run, featuring North Crowley’s playoff wins and scores.

For North Crowley head coach Tommy Brakel, building a high school basketball program looks a lot different today than it did when he first started coaching.

“Branding in 2008, branding in 2026. I mean, that’s the difference right there.”

There was a time when the basketball could speak for itself and exposure might come through a preseason story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Now, social media gives programs and players the ability to tell their story immediately and reach well beyond their own community.

“Years ago, might be sitting down with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram… and now here we are sitting in Revocruit Studios.”

The game still matters. The way programs build visibility around it has completely changed.

North Crowley Head Coach Tommy Brakel stopped by RevoStudios for a sit-down on the journey behind one of the biggest seasons in program history.

Brakel led the Panthers to the 2026 UIL Class 6A Division I State Championship, finishing the year with a historic 35–3 record.

During his visit, he talked about the championship run, his journey as a head coach, what’s next for North Crowley Basketball and the program’s partnership with Revocruit.

Plenty more from Coach Brakel’s conversation coming soon.
