The shot clock is coming to UIL basketball. ⏱️ On Monday, the UIL Legislative Council passed a proposal for a 35-second shot clock, the same standard 35 other states already use, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. It still needs approval from the Commissioner of Education. The phase-in: • 6A & 5A: no earlier than 2028–29 • 4A & 3A: 2030–31 • 2A & 1A: 2032–33 Before then, coaches can agree to use a shot clock in varsity showcases and invitationals, and in non-district games starting in 2027–28. School districts cover equipment, installation and operators. The UIL can reevaluate the timeline for smaller classes each year. The TABC built the case. Its 2023 coach survey drew more than 2,000 responses, with 66% of boys' head coaches and 57% of girls' head coaches in favor. Texas has turned down shot clock proposals since 2021. Not this time. 👀 #TXHoopScene #TexasHoops #UIL #ShotClock #TXHSBasketball Photo of a high school gym with a shot clock reading 35 above the backboard, players and crowd blurred below. North Crowley High School head basketball coach Tommy Brakel joined us at RevoStudios for Coaches Corner to discuss the importance of building a lasting culture and maintaining high expectations year after year. After 28 years leading North Crowley as the program’s only head coach, Brakel has established a family atmosphere where former players remain connected and each new generation understands the standard set before them. For Coach Brakel, players and talented graduating classes may come and go, but the expectations never change. Each group is responsible for carrying the torch and continuing the legacy built by those who came before them. “The tradition doesn’t graduate. Players may graduate.” Catch the full Coaches Corner interview with Coach Tommy Brakel on the Revocruit YouTube Channel.

North Crowley head coach Tommy Brakel breaks down one of the biggest shots in school history — the three that sent the Panthers to the state championship game. With 17 seconds left against Duncanville, Brakel turned to Tyler Hastings, a senior guard who had played limited minutes all season, to step in and shoot two free throws. After missing both, Hastings stayed ready. Seconds later, the ball found him on the wing, and he buried the go-ahead three that ultimately sent North Crowley to San Antonio. Brakel’s decision came down to trust. Hastings had earned it through the work he put in every day, and when the season came down to one possession, he delivered a moment North Crowley will never forget.
