MEAS at @ncstate @ncstatesciences | Investigating the forces of nature that shape our lives #ThinkAndDo
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
There's a whole world out there, and a geology degree can help you explore it.

Meet Jenna Holt, who will graduate with a B.S. in geology this summer.

“Geology is incredibly relevant in the world we see today,” Holt said. “The things we use every day, like cell phones, solar panels and cars, are made up of critical minerals.”

Geologists play a behind-the-scenes role in keeping our day-to-day lives running. The career opportunities are diverse and growing, and at NC State, you can shape your experience to suit your goals and passions.

Holt’s degree has taken her out to the deserts of New Mexico and into the forests of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. As an undergraduate, Holt has found a number of opportunities to advance her career. She’s served in leadership roles in the geology and paleontology clubs at NC State, worked in an on-campus research lab and interned at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences.

“There’s a lot out there that we still don’t understand and that could be waiting to be uncovered,” she said.

In Spring 2027, a special class of undergraduates will be bound for Morehead City, NC to participate in an intensive hands-on semester in marine science. For almost ten years, NC State undergrads have studied and worked on the coast, getting their feet wet and their hands sandy alongside top professional researchers and graduate students.

Students in Assistant Professor Thomas Gard's class packed onto the Witherspoon lawn this morning for a weather balloon launch! 🎈

Weather balloons collect information on our atmosphere, like temperature data, moisture data, air pressure data and more. This makes them important tools for meteorologists to build more accurate weather models and forecasts!

Students in MEA 130: Introduction to Weather and Climate went on to map and analyze the data collected during this morning's launch. This (big!) class explores the structure, physical causes and climatology of weather systems, helping students get real-world exposure to forecasting techniques. by @ncstatemeas

We're thrilled to share that Professor Karl Wegmann has been elected as a fellow of the Geological Society of America!

According to @geosociety, being elected as a fellow is an honor “bestowed on the best” of the geoscience profession.

“I am honored to be recognized by my professional peers as a GSA Fellow,” Wegmann said. “Throughout my career at NC State, I have been fortunate to work with amazing students and colleagues. I am especially grateful to the graduate students I have worked with, who have informed, challenged and improved the geologic research we have conducted together.”

As a geomorphologist, Wegmann focuses on reading landscapes as records of past environmental change and geologic hazards, understanding how rivers, landslides, earthquakes, humans, and even beavers shape the Earth’s surface over time.

A dedicated educator and mentor, Wegmann teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in general geology and natural hazards, Earth surface processes and field geology. Students in Wegmann’s lab conduct research around the world.

"To the hundreds of undergraduate students I have taught over the past 18 years, sharing Earth Surface Processes, aka the 'Science of Scenery,' and Field Geology with you has helped me become a better educator," Wegmann said. "Thank you!"

Please join us in congratulating Professor Wegmann on this well-deserved accomplishment 👏

Our two-month #MADEx 2026 field season across the #Gobi desert of #Mongolia has come to a close! This year we brought together an incredible team of bio- and geoscientists from the US, Mongolia, South Africa, and the UK for @nsfgov funded project on the impact of Cretaceous climate change on terrestrial life. Together we visited 44 localities in 44 days and collected more than 1,924 specimens! It's been a long 4.5 months of fieldwork for @zannolablive @naturalsciences and @ncstatesciences and I'm excited to be settled back into the lab for a while. Can't wait to share some of our discoveries as we get down to work on the analytical side... in the meantime, here are some of my favorite photos from the expedition. I miss it already! by @ncstatemeas
