In Spring 2027, a special class of undergraduates will be bound for Morehead City, NC to participate in an intensive hands-on semester in marine science. For almost ten years, NC State undergrads have studied and worked on the coast, getting their feet wet and their hands sandy alongside top professional researchers and graduate students. Watch the video to learn about what Spring 2026 Semester at CMAST student, Sam Stanforth, had to say about his experience and research!

Our two-month #MADEx 2026 field season across the #Gobi desert of #Mongolia has come to a close! This year we brought together an incredible team of bio- and geoscientists from the US, Mongolia, South Africa, and the UK for @nsfgov funded project on the impact of Cretaceous climate change on terrestrial life. Together we visited 44 localities in 44 days and collected more than 1,924 specimens! It's been a long 4.5 months of fieldwork for @zannolablive @naturalsciences and @ncstatesciences and I'm excited to be settled back into the lab for a while. Can't wait to share some of our discoveries as we get down to work on the analytical side... in the meantime, here are some of my favorite photos from the expedition. I miss it already!

The MADEx team is ready to depart on our 6-week trip across the Gobi funded by @nsfgov and the NRF South Africa! We’ll be studying the impact of the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum on terrestrial life. Our geology/climate team and our bio team are splitting upon departure to explore different Early Cretaceous localities but we’ll be joining up in a couple weeks. First stop for the bio crew is excavating a couple new, previously discovered, theropod species!🤩 Thanks to Ale Chiarenza for the photos!

This spring, sixteen NC State students studied and scuba dived on the island of Bonaire for the field component of their spring semester class, “Ecological and Geological Processes in an immersive scientific diving experience”. 🌊 CMAST Director Dave Eggleston, along with College of Sciences Dean Lewis Owen, NC State’s Dive Safety Officer Steve Broadhurst, and NC State’s Physical Education and Scuba Instructor Matt Rever, taught the class in Bonaire, where the students gained experience in collecting data on the health of coral reefs, participated in coral restoration, and learned about the geology and culture of this Dutch Island. @ncstatemeas @ncstatestudyabroad Diver holding coral near a coral tree. Text reads: Students gain hands-on scientific diving experience in Bonaire. NC State University Study Abroad Logo featured.
