Our special #naidocweek2021 report is on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views on autism. The views of Indigenous people are rarely taken into account in discussions around autism. As an Australian-based media company, we're committing to telling more stories from the very few pieces of peer-reviewed research in these communities that have not seen the light of day until we took the time to dig them out.

We hope these initial insights will shed a culturally diverse perspective on autism and neurodiversity.

Alt Text: Image 1 shows a hand-drawn picture of the Aboriginal flag and a boomerang, stating "How Autistic Kids are looked after by Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities."

2: A 2020 peer reviewed study by Australian researchers discovered how Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander communities view autism. Here are positive stories from mothers of autistic kids.

3. My extended family protects my autistic son "like little sons", with a picture of a hand-drawn lion contained in a white circle with a red circle adjacent to it.

4. If anyone from outside the family...does something in the playground with Kai, all those little cousins will come in and they enclose a circle around him and they protect him. Then they explain to the other kids that he's got autism.

5. Whenever my boys around Aboriginal kids, they're just them, with a hand-drawn picture of a kangaroo and the number two contained in a red circle next to the picture.

6. We've not grown up with 'that child has something', next to a hand-drawn picture of an echidna.

7. "Going on country" is a form of therapy for my son.

8. Telling traditional stories and imparting knowledge about local fauna and flora is a way to connect him with his heritage and self-regulate.

10. Neurodiversity Media respectfully acknowledges the Terramerragal and Gadigal people of the Eora nation and the Bunurong Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Eastern Kulin nations, traditional custodians of the land on which we live, work and learn. We pay our respects to elders last, present and emerging. by @ndmediahq

“There are very limited resources to give autistic people the necessary support. Without these adjustments autism can turn into a disability.

But under the right circumstances it can truly be a gift and turn into something you - and society - can benefit from.”

We couldn’t agree more - that’s why we create resources to help autistic and other neurodivergent people thrive and succeed in the workplace.
