Hey! Guess who was featured on Refinery 29?! Me!! 💫✨🌟

I've been reading Refinery 29 since I was 13 years old, and I'm pretty sure it was the first website I ever used my email to subscribe to. So, seeing my face up there next to some INCREDIBLE women means a lot to me.

Not only is it the first time my words have been published by a huge media company, it's also an incredibly personal topic that I've been advocating for for the last year 💘

I honestly wish there was articles like this out there when I was freshly diagnosed with Autism at age 17. It was 2016/2017 before the likes of TikTok and the #ActuallyAutistic community so I had nowhere to find people like me. I relied on an old book called 'Asperges for Teen Girls' that listed every single negative trait, and how to hide those traits so I could make something of myself, as if being Autistic was a death sentence.

At the time, I truely thought it was a death sentence. I did everything I could to try and not be Autistic. I created a fake persona and I worked full time as a manager in a surf store with blaring music 24/7 helping and serving customers all day (a literal nightmare for an autistic person). For an entire year I came home every night and laid on my bed in total silent darkness sobbing and hurting myself until the next morning where I had to do it all again. I thought that this was how life was meant to be as an autistic person. I now know those were meltdowns and were a result of complete sensory overload and overwhelm.

Today I'm still trying to find myself under layers and layers of masking and those fake personas I used to so badly cling to. I'm still recovering from that period today. And I now know that being my autistic self, with the negatives AND POSITIVES, is a better life than that empty so called 'successful' life I had before.

The past year, and probably next few years will be a journey of finding my autistic self. With the help of professionals, the Autistic community, and articles like these, I'm learning how to thrive in a world that was never designed for me to thrive in 💞🌸

Thank you @refinery29au and @yemagz for allowing me to be apart of this beautiful article Screenshot of autism article

Surprise!

I’d been ruminating on the idea that I might be autistic for months before I asked my psychiatrist the throwaway question, “Hey, do you think I might be autistic?”

I certainly wasn’t prepared for him to say yes, and with so much conviction.
This was last November, and I knew I wanted to talk about it with you at some point but I had a lot to learn and even more to unlearn. I gave myself the deadline of April for Autism Acceptance Month and… here we are!
There’s more to it than that, of course, but we’ll save that chat for later.

I really want to thank @yemagz and @refinery29au for listening and bringing this important piece together, and @ndmediahq @lignestudio.co @aluna_ink_ for their words - I saw myself in all of it.

If you’re looking to find out more, @amazeautism have lots of info on their website, @ndmediahq is a great discovery, @clembastow’s book “Late Bloomer” is a wonderful read, and Eric Garcia’s “We’re Not Broken” is incredible.

@refinery29au have some further reading at the end of the article - link is in my stories right now ♥️
