Created in honor of the beloved artist/performer/director and co-founder of Mabou Mines, the Ruth Maleczech Award celebrates performers who embody Ruth’s daring, raw, and fearless spirit.

Congratulations 2026 awardees Neil Greenberg and Holly Hughes and thank you to all who came to celebrate.

Yesterday afternoon the wonderful Holly Hughes and I were each presented with a 2026 Ruthie Award, named in honor of the powerhouse performer Ruth Malezech of Mabou Mines. I am beyond grateful.

Clove Galilee, Ruth's daughter, presented me with the award. I did a little dance, and I gave a little speech, the majority of which follows:

"I moved to NYC at the age of 17 in the fall of 1976 - 50 years ago! I was greener than green behind the ears, about to begin at Juilliard, with dreams of having a life as a dancer, and maybe even daring to dream of becoming a choreographer. In the Spring of 1977 I somehow found myself at the Public Theater seeing something called “Dressed Like an Egg” - the Mabou Mines work taken from the writings of Colette and directed by JoAnne Akalitis. Ruth Malezech was one of the six amazing performers. Seeing that work blew my mind. I didn’t have much frame of reference for what I was experiencing, but I was fascinated, intrigued, challenged, and enthralled. I soon left Juilliard and started studying at the Merce Cunningham Studio, eventually dancing in the company. I started making dances. I also soon started devouring all the performance I could find, especially works by Mabou Mines, The Wooster Group, and fanboying out on brilliant drag performers and trans performers creating their own kind of magic on the tiny stage at The Anvil. And eventually all the incredible performance on the equally tiny stage of King Tuts Wah-Wah Hut. Little by little I came to understand a new-for-me notion of performance, of being a performer. The broad continuum of what constitutes performance. The power of performance.

I learned so much about performing from watching Ruth Malezech onstage over the years. She certainly brought to her performances a much-commented-about wildness, but I also marvelled at the precision of thought and action which, it seemed to me, provided a structure for all that courageous precariousness. At least as importantly, I learned from her generous spirit, so much in evidence every time I observed her going about life off the stage. I feel extremely fortunate to have lived in the age of Ruth Maleczech."

The Research in Action Awards (RIAA) are on Thursday, October 15, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Angel Orensanz Foundation at 172 Norfolk St. in the Lower East Side. The RIAA is TAG’s biggest night of the year and celebrates the scientists, artists, and researchers working to end HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and hepatitis C.

This year’s RIAA performance will be showcased by Neil Greenberg, Jennifer Lafferty, and Owen Prum forming an excerpt from a work-in-progress by Neil Greenberg titled “Next Dance”.

Neil Greenberg is an American dancer, post-modern choreographer, and educator based in New York City. He came to New York from Minnesota in 1976 and danced with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1979-1986. He is known for his “Not-About-AIDS-Dance”, which employs his signature use of projected text as a layering strategy that provides doors into “meanings” in the dance, while also raising questions about the nature of meaning-making.

Neil has won a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Bessie Awards, and fellowships from the NEA, NYFA, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, among other honors, and just received a 2026 Ruth Maleczech award.

“Next Dance”, a new 50-minute work, explores "next-ness," the possibilities that arise from working within constraints, and "dance-ness," using material drawn verbatim from the performers' recorded improvisations. As Neil says, it's also his next dance.

Thrilled to announce 2026 Ruthie Awardee! Neil Greenberg came to New York from Minnesota in 1976 and danced with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1979-1986. He is known especially for his “Not-About-AIDS-Dance,” which employs his signature use of projected text as a layering strategy that provides doors into “meanings” in the dance, while also raising questions about the nature of meaning-making. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and two Bessie Awards, repeated fellowships from the NEA and NYFA, a fellowship from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, a NDP Production grant, a Doris Duke Creative Exploration Award, and repeated support from the MAP Fund and NYSCA. He has created two works for Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project. Greenberg has taught at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School, UC Riverside, Purchase College and Sarah Lawrence College. He served as dance curator at The Kitchen from 1995-1999. His most recent project, Betsy (2022, La Mama) continues his perhaps utopian interest in moving away from representation toward an experience of the performance moment in and of itself. He is currently working on “Next Dance,” which will be performed at The Chocolate Factory Theater November 12-21, 2026.

The Ruth Maleczech Award is a no-strings-attached cash award granted by Mabou Mines together with Ruth’s family, Clove Galilee and Lute Breuer. The awardee is selected through a nomination process and is given to a performer who embodies Ruth’s daring and raw, naked, fearlessness in every performance. “The Ruthie” was created to honor Ruth Maleczech, the beloved artist/performer/director and co-founder of Mabou Mines. She was an inspiration, a mentor, and a role model for countless artists. #ruthieaward #artist #maboumines #ruthmaleczech #neilgreenberg by @neilgberg

Next Dance is a new 50-minute dance performance work that investigates “next-ness”: of proceeding from the materials at hand to work toward new potentialities; of performing possibility as a negotiation with constraints.

Next Dance also explores “dance-ness” and “performance-ness,” with roots in a movement discovery process by which I utilize source material culled ‘verbatim’ from recorded improvisations by each of the performers.

Next Dance is also my next dance.
