The Research in Action Awards (RIAA) are on Thursday, October 15, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Angel Orensanz Foundation at 172 Norfolk St. in the Lower East Side. The RIAA is TAG’s biggest night of the year and celebrates the scientists, artists, and researchers working to end HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and hepatitis C.

This year’s RIAA performance will be showcased by Neil Greenberg, Jennifer Lafferty, and Owen Prum forming an excerpt from a work-in-progress by Neil Greenberg titled “Next Dance”.

Neil Greenberg is an American dancer, post-modern choreographer, and educator based in New York City. He came to New York from Minnesota in 1976 and danced with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1979-1986. He is known for his “Not-About-AIDS-Dance”, which employs his signature use of projected text as a layering strategy that provides doors into “meanings” in the dance, while also raising questions about the nature of meaning-making.

Neil has won a Guggenheim Fellowship, two Bessie Awards, and fellowships from the NEA, NYFA, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, among other honors, and just received a 2026 Ruth Maleczech award.

“Next Dance”, a new 50-minute work, explores "next-ness," the possibilities that arise from working within constraints, and "dance-ness," using material drawn verbatim from the performers' recorded improvisations. As Neil says, it's also his next dance.

Thrilled to announce 2026 Ruthie Awardee! Neil Greenberg came to New York from Minnesota in 1976 and danced with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company from 1979-1986. He is known especially for his “Not-About-AIDS-Dance,” which employs his signature use of projected text as a layering strategy that provides doors into “meanings” in the dance, while also raising questions about the nature of meaning-making. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and two Bessie Awards, repeated fellowships from the NEA and NYFA, a fellowship from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, a NDP Production grant, a Doris Duke Creative Exploration Award, and repeated support from the MAP Fund and NYSCA. He has created two works for Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project. Greenberg has taught at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School, UC Riverside, Purchase College and Sarah Lawrence College. He served as dance curator at The Kitchen from 1995-1999. His most recent project, Betsy (2022, La Mama) continues his perhaps utopian interest in moving away from representation toward an experience of the performance moment in and of itself. He is currently working on “Next Dance,” which will be performed at The Chocolate Factory Theater November 12-21, 2026.

The Ruth Maleczech Award is a no-strings-attached cash award granted by Mabou Mines together with Ruth’s family, Clove Galilee and Lute Breuer. The awardee is selected through a nomination process and is given to a performer who embodies Ruth’s daring and raw, naked, fearlessness in every performance. “The Ruthie” was created to honor Ruth Maleczech, the beloved artist/performer/director and co-founder of Mabou Mines. She was an inspiration, a mentor, and a role model for countless artists. #ruthieaward #artist #maboumines #ruthmaleczech #neilgreenberg
