Last week, our 3B Founder, Brooklyn DeLawn, had the opportunity to serve as a guest reader for the Springfield Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School!

She shared Nelly’s Affirmations, the children’s book she wrote to promote confidence, representation, and social-emotional wellness. She even brought Stuffed Nelly along for the experience! The scholars were engaged, participated in the affirmations, and reminded us how powerful it is when children see themselves reflected in the stories they read.

Rooted in the spirit of Sankofa, this moment was about honoring where we come from, affirming who we are, and using those lessons to build a stronger future.

Reading Buddies but this time… small groups 🫂
More intentional. More focused. More impactful.

Small groups allow us to really tap into how each child learns, understands, and connects with the text. Every child processes differently and this setup gives them the space to be seen, heard, and supported in real time.

We brought Nelly’s Affirmations into the space and when I tell you… she was a smash hit. The kids connected, engaged, and most importantly they saw themselves in the story.
Nelly’s Affirmations isn’t just a book, it’s a tool. It builds confidence, encourages positive self-talk, and reminds our babies that they are loved, capable, and worthy. That kind of foundation matters early.

Real talk… I’m still figuring this out.
I don’t always know how to reach the right audience. Marketing and PR are real barriers. It takes strategy, access, and money that isn’t always there. And that’s something people don’t talk about enough when you’re building something from the ground up.

But I’m not stopping. I’m leaning into the work. I’m doing the research. I’m sharpening my skills through my MPA. I’m learning how to move smarter, not just harder.

And in the middle of all of it, the affirmations are doing exactly what they were meant to do. They’re grounding me. They’re reminding me why I started.

This is what it looks like behind the scenes. Drop offs. Consistency. Faith.

It took me a minute to share this clip of me reading Nelly’s Affirmations. I love education and I’m big on interactive learning, so part of me felt like just reading through the text wouldn’t be enough. I want to offer kids an experience, not just content and creating that on video takes time, skill, and tools I’m still growing into.

But growth starts with showing up.
