The Broken Earth Trilogy
N. K. Jemison

If I’m grade school you always had a special fascination with the geological cross section diagrams in textbooks and the rocks and minerals day in an earth science class, this series is for you!

This series was on my tbr for a couple of years, honestly since I started seriously reading fantasies and scifis again, and wow it definitely makes sense why these books have garnered so many accolades.

The writing style is phenomenal and draws you into the mystery of the story, and unlike most series, it doesn’t really sell all of its mystery in the first book, so I definitely felt eager to continue. The exploration of themes pertaining to tribalism, leadership in disaster, and genocide resonate strongly.

If you are looking for mature, strong FMCs, who aren’t just randomly 19 year olds saving the world, then this is for you. The dialogue is candid and quite honestly very humorously honest, it just feels so real despite the magic system and dilemma the characters are posed with.

Perhaps most interestingly it is written in Second Person. So ‘You’ are the one receiving the story for a while. Please! If you are weary of this, don’t let it dissuade you, it’s so so easy to read and will all click into place!!

Is this just me or does Parent/Child heartbreak hurt one million times more than any romance ever could?? I need more book recommendations! Most of my examples of this were from movies and I just want to be devastated like I was for East of Eden again.

The bonus micro trope is the specific use of time travel to allow a parent and child to see each other one last time ie. Interstellar, About Time, Boy and the Heron, like it’s actually sickening honestly.

What else would you add to these lists?? I think as far as love stories go I cried at Jane Eyre, Manacled, and Never Let Me Go and honestly I don’t even think any of those I was strictly crying cause of the love story they are just more situationally tragic than romantically…. Am I rambling?

August Wrap up!! Only a little bit behind hehe, going for a mish mosh here cause I’m just throwing it together.

This was actually a pretty decent month of reading for me cause I was also a beta reader for someone’s novel. That was such a unique experience, to read with the intent of giving specific and tangible feedback to the writer, and I’d definitely do it again if I had the opportunity.

What’s everyone else been reading? I’m gearing up for cooler temps and spooky season so I think I’m gonna lean to more atmospheric reads and really get in the mood 🍁🍂 honestly feel like I need a life changing fan fiction ahahaha any recs?? by @nene_reads

Not my usual taste in books but sometimes you just need other characters to vent your frustrations for you! Bunny is such an all time example of this genre, it felt so stabby and bitchy. I was hoping Maeve Fly would be a bit deeper than it was, but glad I still switched up from my stretch of fantasies and sci fi to read it.

Have you got any other recs in this category?? 🐰🪓

If you are headed to Big Sur, definitely find time to stop at the Henry Miller Library, the most quirky, magical book store, tucked away in the redwoods. We made the trip this past weekend and it was a blast.

Theres a great selection of classic books, local art, area guides, and stamps to commemorate your visit. It also doesn’t hurt that to get there you have to take one of, if not, the prettiest drives in the country!!

I picked up Slaughterhouse Five, and got as many stamps as would fit that dedication page :)

Rare Aesthetic 🚨 Central Valley core

Burnside by Devyn Defoe

Bought it from an independent book store in SD for the super interesting cover, and stayed for the dreamlike, thickly woven prose about the life of a young woman and her friend in the Central Valley amidst and ensemble of quirky characters and questionable disappearances and deaths.

It was a slightly tricky for me to get totally lost in at first, as it has long paragraphs, with no quotations for dialogue (bonus for you if you’re a fan of that already!), and almost follows one continuous stream of thought. However, I definitely enjoyed the read once I hit stride and got used to the prose. It did really feel like a dream state where you aren’t ever really sure what’s real and not and was such a great commentary on being a young adult in this day and age. It was a real switch up from the usual for my last couple of books.

Was super fun to read from a more local debut author!

Go snag from your local Cali bookstore!! @devyndefoe by @nene_reads

Heyaaaa long time no post 🥲 Women In Translation month!! These are some recent/future reads of mine in this category and I’m always looking to expand and broaden my horizons. I also wanna read Abigail by Magda Sazebo!!

What other books have ya got for me? What’s everyone been up to recently? I’ve been pretty busy at work and lost the creative juice for a little bit but trying to get the rhythm back. by @nene_reads

My inability to take candid photos
Ft. Sweetbitter Song
by Rosie Hewlett

Finished this up last night!! This was recommended by a friend, in the aftermath of The Odyssey.

Sweetbitter Song reimagines the relationship between Penelope and her handmaiden Melantho. I don’t know if I loved it, and as a result read it rather quick in order just kind of get past it. I appreciated the spin on the story and how history often ignores or erases the women’s perspective, but I think I was expecting it to be a bit more prosey rather than reading like Odyssey fan fiction. It felt a little long winded at times.

I think I’ll give this story a rest for a bit before I go to see the movie again. I’m also enjoying Matt Damon as too much of a good dude so it’s hard for me to separate these characters at the moment 😅

The Fifth Season
by N. K. Jemisin

I had been excited for a while to read this one and finally got to it!! Definitely worth of all the science fiction awards it has received. Not only is it an immensely creative world and “magic system”, that focuses on geological energy and thermodynamics, it has an extremely unique narrative structure that keeps you guessing the entire book as to who “You” are.

At first the 2nd person POV was a bit strange but you adjust to it as you go along. I’m super excited to continue with the series now 😁

Who else has read The Broken Earth Trilogy???

Also wanted to say hi to all the new followers in recent weeks!! So glad you are here <3 by @nene_reads
