His writing has been nominated for the Miles Morland Writing Scholarship and the Short Story Day Africa Prize. His short films have screened at festivals around the world, notably, the New York African Film Festival, the Pan African Film Festival, the Durban International Film Festival, the Zanzibar International Film Festival, and the Africa International Film Festival. His second novel, Every Drop of Blood Is Red (Little A), was released in 2024, a profound, unflinching work rooted in the landscape and lived realities of Northern Nigeria. He teaches creative writing in the University of British Columbia's Okanagan campus. On May 16, Umar will read from his work, join a live conversation, and be on hand to sign copies.
