One alphabet. 26 letters. 26 Nigerian books.

I tried to build the hardest carousel on Bookstagram. It contains a book for every single letter from A to Z, all Nigerian, all contemporary. Fiction, poetry, memoirs, self-help... if it’s Naija, it’s on the table.

A is for...? B is for...? You have to swipe to see if I made it 😅

YOUR TURN:

Drop your best contemporary Nigerian book for any letter in the comments! 👇🏾

Like:
A - Americanah
B - Blackass
...you get it!

And please HELP ME, because I’m STUCK! 🫠
What Nigerian books do you know that start with Q, X, and Z?

Let’s make the ultimate A-Z Naija reading list together.

Every drop of blood is red | Umar Turaki

Pamson Dareng, mechanic and Rahila’s husband. A man who’s trying to put together the remains of his once broken home receives a visitor in the rain at his home, a lady, Murmula Denge who claims to be desperately in need of a job at his workshop.

While Dareng is curious as to why this ‘young’ lady wants to work at his auto-repair shop, Murmula works ahead to get closer to his wife and Paul, his wife’s cousin. Unbeknownst to him, Murmula is out for revenge. For his blood and everything he owns. Series of events take place after he reluctantly hires her that makes him confront his past and seek answers daily. Is he really a changed man and did he deserve what he was getting?

Every drop of blood is red is a story of betrayal, loss, grief, redemption, family and cost of violence. Set in Jos, in the early 2000s and Ilorin. The author tells us about Jos pre and post crisis period. He highlights the beautiful coexistence that existed between the people of Jos. The display of oneness and unity in the once home of “peace” and tourism before everything changed.

❤️ Red: passion, sacrifice, courage, and the price of survival.

For the red entry in our #ColoursSeries, Every Drop of Blood Is Red wears its colour proudly.

Every Drop of Blood Is Red is a gripping, multi-layered tale of revenge, faith, and grief. It follows a young Muslim woman’s quest to avenge her father’s death, set against the volatile, politically charged backdrop of Jos, Nigeria 🇳🇬.

❤️ Umar Turaki’s Every Drop of Blood Is Red is a must-read for its compelling blend of a tense revenge thriller with deep explorations of trauma, forgiveness, and humanity in Nigeria. The story offers gripping character dynamics, a vivid portrayal of a city in conflict, and surprising, genre-bending narrative twists, all while questioning the true cost of vengeance.

Book Review ahead of my conversation with @nenrota Thursday April 23 at 7:00pm ET.
📕
On a rainy day in Northern Nigeria in 2018, Murmula Denge finds Dareng Pansom, the man she believes killed her father and stole his land. With the help of their nephew Paul, Murmula convinces Dareng to hire her in his auto shop, while she plots her revenge, a blood for blood poisoning. Only things don’t go as planned.
As Dareng Pansom tries to win his pregnant wife’s forgiveness after an affair, he struggles to keep his personal life and business life separate. When Murmula appears on his doorstep asking for a job, he has no idea the world is about to flip on its axis and that all his hopes will, quite literally, disappear.
Told from dual timelines, a mystery reveals itself while another global mystery unfolds – people begin to disappear and nobody understands why. A sensual literary feast, EVERY DROP OF BLOOD IS RED is an examination of loss and how the grief we hold too tightly can so easily become a crusade of revenge.
Characters show the cultural and political conflict among Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, while revealing the our immense capacity for forgiveness and its moral opponent – revenge, Umar Turaki deftly reveals a story about all the ways we choose to move forward when the past insists on pulling us back.
