“Sarah Sherman Samuel’s new Grand Rapids gallery is a homecoming”

@businessofhome features @gallery__sss by Michigan-born designer @sarahshermansamuel is coming home with a new gallery in Grand Rapids. Gallery SSS, opening alongside her new studio, launches with HOMECOMING, an exhibition bringing together artists and makers with roots in Michigan and the greater Midwest.

Sarah tells editor @haleychouinard: “Whenever I visit galleries in other cities, there’s this sense of discovery that you leave with. I realized we could bring that to the community here.”

Homecoming explores how the region’s landscapes, seasons, materials, and cultural rhythms continue to inform creative practices shaped far beyond their origins. Spanning clay, wood, glass, fiber, leather, aluminum, and reclaimed materials, the work intentionally blurs the boundaries between art, craft, and design.

Our project for Stylus (@stylusnyc) is in this week’s Design section of the New York Times (@nytimes).

Stylus asked for a place where music is listened to properly, and our aim was a sequence of rooms that each foster a different kind of attention from its visitor. As architects we shaped the whole building around that, from the double height listening room at the ground floor to the quieter spaces above, and assembling the group who made it with us is the part we are proudest of.

Two floors up, the building goes quiet. The back wall of LIMEN LOUNGE opens onto the city with a terrace beyond it, and sculptural light horns pull daylight deep into the room. It changes with the hour, moving from morning sound meditation, through coffee and work in the afternoon, to lectures and small gatherings in the evening. It is the counterbalance to the enclosed intensity of EPHEMERAL below.

A large pivoting wall separates the lounge from THE LOFT, which can host overnight stays. Pivot the wall and the whole floor becomes one event space, with THE LOFT turning into a working test kitchen where Chef Anita Lo (@anitalonyc) runs food experiences for members.

Thank you to New York Times (@nytimes) and editor Julie Lasky (@julielaskynyc), to Steven Kurutz for such a considered piece. Thank you to our media team NES Creative (@nescreative_) and of course to the team at Stylus (@stylusnyc) for trusting us with this building and for being a pleasure to work with.

HOMECOMING is a group show of artists whose roots trace back to Michigan and the greater Midwest.

Opening September 10th as the inaugural exhibition at @sarahshermansamuel’s @gallery__sss, the exhibition explores how the region’s landscapes, seasons, materials, and cultural rhythms continue to inform creative practices shaped in places far beyond their origins.

At its heart, HOMECOMING is about the complicated and enduring relationship between where we come from and the work we go on to make.

@galeriemagazine features @sarahshermansamuel’s new furniture collection photographed by @josephgbradshaw in The Shirakaba House, a historic residence by Frank Lloyd Wright in West Michigan.

The collection is produced with local craftspeople and manufacturers in West Michigan which has a long history in American design, rising to fame in the mid-late 19th Century as “Furniture City.”

Sarah tells editor @ryanwaddoups: “A big part of what I want to build with this collection is a model that supports American craft and manufacturing.”

What a night in Tribeca.

Last Friday we opened our showroom doors for an evening with @sarahshermansamuel. It was a conversation about process, about making things with intention, and about what it means to build a body of work that is truly your own. Her book, published by @abramsbooks, was the catalyst, but it was great to have conversation to discuss deeper.

Gratitude to @loraappleton of the @femaledesigncouncil for moderating with such grace, and to @nescreative_ for bringing it all together.

This is exactly the kind of gathering we hoped our showroom would make possible. It’s so great when designers, makers, and curious minds are all in the same room, leaving more inspired than when they walked in.

More of this! Full panel video will be made available soon! by @nescreative_
