Fifteen years ago I was in a five-hour film about growing up, movies, and the persistence of memory through recorded/moving images. At least this is what Raya Martin’s “Now Showing” continues to mean to me. Referencing previous decades, all my scenes were shot using a home video camera. We set up situations that were then recorded in real-time: a young girl playing on the street, eating tinola while watching tv, doing homework, a birthday party where none of my classmates show up. I was already in university then. Straight from my classes in Ateneo, I would go to our location in UP Diliman, dress up as a kid and play as the camera recorded everything. A few months later, I take my first plane ride overseas to attend our premiere at the Cannes Film Festival - Director’s Fortnight section. We didn’t really use social media back then, our phones didn’t even have cameras. I used a desktop PC to email my parents when I arrived. I never shared these official photos anywhere. From my vantage point today I feel weird only having a few photos from this major thing that happened to us in May 2008. We seem to be so underdressed for the occasion (me quite literally so) and I rarely took photos with the digital camera I borrowed. I have no videos from that trip. As my memory of actually being there begins to fade, I take comfort in knowing that at least those afternoons I spent playing in Diliman were all caught on film. /

So over here, we have an artifact from past. 😆 Was once photographed by THE @bjpascual for the now defunct meg magazine. We were both featured in the “Young Achievers Under 25” list. And this is how even then I already knew BJ Pascual is the GOAT. He produced this image out of a scrappy teen na laging nakatsinelas at magulo ang buhok. I had a few photoshoots at that time after returning from Cannes pero siya lang ang naka-achieve ng ganitong fantasy haha. He paid attention to me and our shoot even though I wasn’t a celebrity. Salamat BJ for giving me my Nicole moment. ✨💖✨
