CURRENTLY ON VIEW IN BERLIN

We are very happy to share a few impressions of Götz Diergarten’s (@goetzdiergarten) participation in the group exhibition “Rooms / Stages” at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin (@helmutnewtonfoundation).

The exhibition brings together twelve photographers whose works explore different relationships between photography and space.

Götz Diergarten is represented with works from his METROpolis series, which he began in 2006 and has continued ever since, photographing underground stations in various European capitals. At the Helmut Newton Foundation, works from Berlin and London are on view. Without the usual flow of passengers, these normally busy spaces reveal their architecture, colours and geometric structures in an entirely different way.

One of the works currently on view in Berlin was also shown at Emde Gallery as part of our group exhibition “REMIX 1”.

“Rooms / Stages” is on view at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin until 15 November 2026.

The German Pavilion, featuring the exhibition “Ruin“ by artists Sung Tieu and Henrike Naumann.
The exhibition examines the political, social and architectural ruptures of post-reunification Germany. Sung Tieu has transformed the pavillon’s neoclassical façade with a trompe-l’œil mosaic that references a GDR-era prefabricated Plattenbau once used to house Vietnamese contract workers in Berlin.
Inside, Henrike Naumann’s installation uses interior design and institutional structures to contrast personal and collective memory with official historical narratives. Painted in a distinctive mint green reminiscent of abandoned Soviet barracks, the space reflects on the enduring tensions between East and West, and the ways in which ideological systems continue to shape the present.
A particularly striking intervention by Sung Tieu appears in one of the side rooms, where chocolate ladybugs 🐞 populate the walls – a playful and unexpected element that subtly disrupts the building’s monumental architecture.

Next: the Japan Pavilion, featuring “Grass Babies, Moon Babies“ by artist Ei Arakawa-Nash.
Arakawa-Nash has populated the pavilion and its gardens with over 200 lifelike baby dolls. Visitors are invited to pick up a doll, carry it through the exhibition, and participate in collective acts of caregiving – including a diaper-changing station at the exit.
Inspired by the artist’s personal experience as a queer parent, the installation moves beyond playful interaction and evolves into a deeper, collective reflection on community, care and coexistence.

There is too much to show in one single post, so over the next few days I’ll be sharing a few impressions from some of the national pavilions and exhibitions that particularly stayed with me during my recent visit to Venice.

I’m starting with the Spanish Pavilion, featuring “Los restos“ by Oriol Vilanova. Vilanova has transformed the pavilion into an immersive anti-museum and archive. The entire space is covered with thousands of discarded postcards collected by the artist over more than twenty years from flea markets across Europe. Sorted by subject and color, this massive accumulation of everyday souvenirs becomes a visual archaeology of collective memory, tourism, and time.

More Biennale impressions to follow.
