🎬 Three weeks of work instead of 60 weekends? That’s exactly what we did this summer between London Charing Cross and Waterloo East.

Packing lots of engineering work into a shorter time meant less disruption.

A major milestone hit in making Hither Green station fully accessible! 🚉

On Friday 2 October, the new footbridge connecting all platforms opened to Southeastern passengers as part of the Access for All programme.

Its installation and successful testing mark an exciting milestone in making the station easier and more convenient for everyone to use.

There’s more to come, including four new 16-person lifts, new staircases and a link passageway between platforms 4 and 5.

Once complete, the new facilities will provide step-free access from street level to the footbridge and every platform—making journeys easier for disabled passengers and people travelling with luggage or pushchairs.

Even better, engineers are ahead of schedule on the £28m @transportgovuk funded programme. Completion is now planned for spring 2027, when step-free access from street to platform will be available for the first time.

Passengers will also benefit from new CCTV, a public address system, customer information screens, a ticket vending machine and Oyster card readers.

Alongside the station improvements, the neighbouring nature reserve will be restored and replanted to support environmental recovery and biodiversity.
Network Rail is managing the programme, with principal contractor @bamukandireland UK & Ireland delivering the construction alongside architects Fereday Pollard & Partners and civil engineering designers @arcadisarchitecture , @mcnealybrownltd is fabricating and installing the main structure.

New Hither Green footbridge opens for passengers as £28m programme hits latest milestone.

On Friday 2 October, the new footbridge linking all platforms opened to passengers as part of the Access for All programme.

The footbridge has been installed and tested, marking a major step towards improving accessibility and passenger movement. It will eventually connect the platforms with the new station entrances on Fernbrook Road and Springbank Road.

The programme also includes four new 16-person lifts, staircases and a link passageway between platforms 4 and 5.

Once complete, the new facilities will provide step-free access from street level to the footbridge and all platforms, improving access for disabled passengers and those travelling with luggage or pushchairs.

Engineers are ahead of schedule on the £28m Department for Transport-funded programme. Completion is now planned for spring 2027, when step-free access from street to platform will be available for the first time.

New CCTV, a public address system, customer information screens, a ticket vending machine and Oyster card readers will also be installed.

The adjacent #naturereserve will also be restored, with replanting to support environmental recovery and biodiversity.

🎬 We're repairing London Waterloo's 100 year-old roof.

The roof that covers the station's concourse was rebuilt in 1922. We're replacing the glazing to make it safe and reliable for the long term.

Did you know around 270,000 journeys are made on the Portsmouth Direct Line each week? 🤯

As one of the busiest routes, there's plenty happening behind the scenes. We've been making improvements across the line, including strengthening the only rail bridge into and out of Portsmouth, giving the iconic Landport Viaduct at Portsmouth & Southsea a refresh, and refurbishing the bridge at Fratton station to make it cleaner and brighter.

There's more to come, with a £120m resignalling programme underway in the Havant area, due for completion in November 2027.

And while there's plenty happening behind the scenes, there's plenty waiting at the other end, too... 👀

✨Just over a week ago, we successfully completed a £20 million renewal project which involved closing Charing Cross and Waterloo East station for 22 days.

🛤️During that time, we renewed old tracks, platforms, avoided 60 weekends of closure and more.

🙏Thank you to all our partners for making the project a success and to our customers for bearing with us while we carried out these essential works.

We are pleased to be collaborating with @networkrail to provide grass and wildfire messaging at their stations.

Even with the weather cooling down, the dry conditions still pose a fire risk. Sharing our messaging with as many Londoners as possible is key, so utilising the high footfall of Network Rail’s stations has been a great way to make steps towards achieving this.

Find our full guidance on our website, under the 'Safety' section. An eye-level, medium shot depicts a train station lobby, with people walking around or standing in line, below three large digital displays.

The display on the left is a train departure board, which lists "Arrivals" and "Lioness Line," as well as "Next Service to Watford Junction."

The display in the center is an ad for Network Rail and the London Fire Brigade (LFB), with the text "Help Prevent Grass Fires" in red. Underneath, a photo depicts a fire next to a railway track. To the left of the photo, three icons and descriptions appear: a "No Barbecues" icon next to "No BBQs in parks or public spaces"; a "No Smoking" icon next to "Fully extinguish cigarettes before you bin them"; and a "No Littering" icon next to "Take litter home if bins are full." To the right of the photo, a red LFB logo appears. The bottom of the ad reads: "Small actions can make a difference." by @networkrailsouthern

If anyone is still wondering why we needed to close Charing Cross station, and why we needed to do it when trains weren’t running, here is a very 'quick' look at the immense work that took place over the last 22 days. taken in London Charing Cross by @networkrailsouthern

🎉 Welcome back, Charing Cross and Waterloo East!

After 22 days of around-the-clock engineering work, trains are once again running into both stations following £20 million of investment in vital railway improvements.

A few facts from the project 👇
🔧 Nearly 2km of track was replaced
🏗️ 540 tonnes of concrete were removed from Charing Cross platforms
✨ More than 2,000m² of new platform surfacing was installed
🪟 New self-cleaning glass has been installed at Waterloo East to bring more natural light into the station and improve ventilation
📅 The closure was 18 months in the planning, bringing together essential work into one 22-day programme rather than multiple future closures

Thank you to our customers for their patience and understanding while this important work was completed, and to our colleagues and partners who helped make it happen. by @networkrailsouthern
