73142 was named ‘Broadlands’ on 25 September 1980, ten months before hauling the Royal Train carrying Prince Charles and Princess Diana from London Waterloo to Romsey following their wedding on 29 July 1981. From Romsey, the newlyweds travelled to Broadlands House to begin their honeymoon – the very estate after which the Electro-Diesel had been named. 73142 would later become 73201 in 1988 following conversion for dedicated Gatwick Express duties.

𝗚𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿
A spellbinding paint job carried out by the team at St Leonards depot has seen GBRf’s 73141 ‘Spa Valley Railway’ restored to InterCity Executive colours. The Electro-Diesel is seen leading 73213 ‘Rhodalyn’ across Rochester Bridge with the 3W01 09.20 Tonbridge West Yard GBRf circular Railhead Treatment Train (RHTT) diagram running via Grain and Battersea Park (twice) on 8 October 2026.

Rochester has a particularly interesting railway history
with numerous changes to its track layouts, stations and river crossings over the years, much of which can be traced back to the fierce rivalry between the South Eastern Railway and the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. This competition resulted in two separate railway crossings of the River Medway with the rival companies effectively duplicating their routes into Rochester.

The original railway bridge opened in 1858, built by the East Kent Railway for its route between Strood and Chatham, which later formed part of the Chatham Main Line. The bridge carrying 73141 in the photo opened in 1891 for the rival South Eastern Railway’s route to the now-closed stations at Rochester Common and Chatham Central. Following the closure of that route in 1911, the bridge continued to carry railway traffic with further alterations to the track layout in 1927 diverting the Chatham Main Line onto it.

The original 1858 railway bridge was subsequently taken out of use with its foundations reused for the road bridge immediately to the left of the railway bridge in this photo which opened in 1970. The older road bridge can be seen further to the left illustrating how the crossings at Rochester have evolved over the years.

AD I’ve always been fascinated by how one of Britain’s busiest stretches of railway actually works. The Thameslink Core is seriously complex, with trains coming through from places like Brighton, Cambridge and Peterborough, and at peak times up to 24 trains an hour passing through in each direction.

For this video I finally got the chance to go behind the scenes, from the control room and lost property to riding in the cab and seeing some of the technology helping make the railway more reliable and increasingly digital.

Super cool getting an inside look at everything happening behind the journeys we make every day.

The RHTT season has returned! Its great to see the 73s with the Rail Head Treatment wagons returning. I've missed the buzz and excitement of seeing them about so brilliant to see my first one of the year today!

In this instance 73213 "Rhodalyn" leads with freshly painted 73141 "Spa Valley Railway" on the rear.
