We are excited to announce the first window gallery exhibition of our new programming season! ✨

‘Devotion’ by Jessie Stueck (Regina) and Jayden Thompson (Regina)

Jayden and Jessie are frequent collaborators, both in community and in their respective practices. This exhibition brings together recent works from both artists that repeat and reinterpret Christian imagery. The pieces selected for display centre stories, images, and experiences that are usually marginalized in the Christian canon. The content of Jessie’s sculptural body of work includes recreation of images from medieval manuscripts and iconography of saints and other figures from Christian narratives and theology. The sculptures selected here feature events from the life of Mary and Mary Magdalene. Both are important female figures in the life of Christ, who often appear in Christian imagery in both central and secondary roles.

In each piece, Mary and Mary Magdalene are interacting directly with angels, reflecting the artist’s interests in Christian mysticism and a direct relationship between the human and divine. Jayden’s ‘Sappho Stain II’ uses the deeply familiar image of a stained glass window to depict a vulva. This depiction echoes historical representations of Christ’s side wound and the mandorlas used to indicate divinity in medieval religious art. Jayden’s prints operate inside the window gallery to emulate the inside of a church, while the sculptures access iconographic language often used to visually convey theology in religious spaces. These pieces work together to center experiences that are not dictated by heteronormative and the patriarchy, and reimagine who and what constitutes divinity. Both Jayden and Jessie grew up attending Christian churches, but are now creating from a secular lens, and their experience of revisiting Christian spaces and ideas from the outside will be repeated by the viewer examining the work within the proposed display. taken in Neutral Ground Artist Run Centre by @neutralgroundarc

On view in our Window Gallery: Rise Up! Rise Up! Curated by our summer student, Myka Der ✨

Heavy on our minds are the persisting horrors of violence, inequity, environmental destruction and an endless stream of devastations that drench headlines and social media. While the temptation to disengage from reality is ever-present, Sue Bland’s exhibition Rise Up! Rise Up! balances grief, rest, humour and joy necessary for sustained resistance. Taking inspiration from birds -the arbiters between realms of both earth and sky, body and spirit, practical and visionary, her exhibition embodies the importance of acknowledging present realities while simultaneously imagining a just and loving world; the world we want to live in.
Through showcasing flocks of overlapping vibrant birds, each collaged from a range of different delicate rice papers, gathering with humans equally as colourful and diverse, Sue showcases a mounting necessity for community. It is only with community that we can emerge amidst destruction and thorns, to cultivate a garden of hope and joy.

Sue Bland (aka Poached Egg Woman) is a self taught artist living in Treaty 4
Territory who explores her world using paper, watercolours, and rubber stamps.
She regularly offers art PLAYshops and retreats. Sue’s art explores our connection with the natural world we are a part of. Recently, as a member of Art for Palestine, Sue has joined with the community to create art for protest, education, healing and solidarity. taken in Neutral Ground Artist Run Centre by @neutralgroundarc
