@snackwitch - bring back as souvenirs
Media: Screen-printed “good morning towels”, clothesline, clips, plastic wash bins, and video.
Date: 2019 - Ongoing
bring back as souvenirs developed from Cheung’s interest in the Good Morning Towel, a banal object they grew up with in Chinese restaurants and Hong Kong style cafes. In 2019, she came across these towels as a display at a Hong Kong museum. Seeing them not being used for their
intended purpose was jarring. Their relationship with these objects shifted and she became curious about how they came to be.
Snack Witch couldn’t find any sources traditionally valued within academia to support their research. They waded through Facebook groups and personal blogs picking out phrases that depicted how people interacted with the towels. She selected four that illustrate the ways they’ve
seen these objects move in the world and screen-printed them onto towels sourced by their mother in Vancouver, BC.
An essential activation that accompanies this project involves Cheung’s invitation to local friends and residents of the host organization to borrow a towel. The objects live with their temporary guests: collecting dust, dirt and stains. Accumulated stains become documents of the ways
they’ve been used to care for other people and objects outside of the presentation space. The towels are then hand-washed by Cheung and hung to dry in the gallery. Thank you to everyone who attended the PLACE FORKY HERE screening at @neutralgroundarc last evening!💝

In my early twenties, I have learned that growing up sometimes means growing apart. Written at a crossroads, this story was born from watching relationships shift as beliefs surfaced- a reflection on growth, compassion, and choosing love, especially in the world we’re living in now.

The film (13 minutes in length) follows Forky- a clown hosting a party- through the long and fluttery hours before the event begins. Full of anticipation, Forky begins to prepare, as they try on different selves, practice social gestures, and set a DJ deck like a place at the table. However, unlike a table setting where each utensil has a designated place, Forky does not know where they belong, or whether there is a place made for them at all.
