“As wildfires grow more frequent and destructive, the most affective defense may begin not with technology or top down policy, but with neighbors”

Read the Western City article featuring the City of Nevada City and its experience combatting the wildfire hazards affecting the community.

In this article you will hear insights on City initiatives from Council member Petersen and the experiences thus far from Nevada City OES staff, Evan Mclenithan and Camille Oneto.

Special thank you to Dr. Elisa Lee, OTD and Western City for supporting and sharing Nevada City’s story.

A few active transportation updates! 🚲🚶

1. Wider Bike Lanes and Shoulders. We recently restriped portions of Nevada City Highway and Gold Flat Road to create wider bicycle lanes/shoulders and narrower vehicle lanes. Since these corridors were already due for routine restriping, it was an opportunity to incorporate a simple, cost-effective safety improvement into regular maintenance. The additional width gives bicyclists more space and greater separation from vehicle traffic, while narrower vehicle lanes can help encourage slower, more careful driving. Small changes like this are a great example of how we can integrate bicycle and pedestrian improvements into routine street maintenance, making our streets safer and more comfortable without requiring a major construction project.

2. Searls Ave Sidewalk. Construction on the new sidewalk along Searls Avenue is underway and making good progress! Here’s a look at the sidewalk grading, concrete pour, and rock facing on the retaining wall.

3. National Week without Driving. In the spirit of making our streets safer and more accessible for people walking, biking, taking transit, and using other ways to get around, this Thursday marks the beginning of the fourth National Week Without Driving from October 1-8. Learn more at weekwithoutdriving.org.

4. Nevada City Active Transportation & Trails Plan. The Nevada City Active Transportation & Trails Plan is underway! In Phase 1, “Listen and Learn,” our consultant, Alta Planning + Design, is helping us gather information about existing conditions and how people currently move around Nevada City. Save the date for our first Community Workshop on November 12 at the Miners Foundry! More details coming soon. by @nevadacityca
