"Why is there such fear over artificial intelligence?"

In the piece "ChatGPT, or the Eschatology of Machines”, published in the @e_flux Journal, philosopher Yuki Hui lists new premises concerning human-machine relations that can liberate our imagination and help us realise human potential. He suggests that "instead of suspending the development of AI (...) technology should be used to realise its user’s potential instead of being their competitor." "Instead of mystifying machines and humanity, understand our current technical reality and its relation to diverse human realities so that this technical reality can be integrated."

Yuki Hui supports that grasping AI's future requires moving beyond conventional philosophical constructs. The critical reading addresses the limitations of John Searle's Chinese Room thought experiment, a point made in the original text. Hui agrees with the text's argument that Searle's experiment is based on an outdated understanding of AI.

"No invention arrives without constraints and problematics (...) Only when we break away from cultural bias and the self-fulfilling prophecy of the tech industry can we develop greater insight into the possibilities of the future, which cannot be based merely on data analysis and pattern extraction. It is highly probable that, before we get there, the industrial prophets of our time will have already realised that machines can predict the future better than they can."
