I feel like there is more that I should say than that I wrote a book? That in the wake of the 2024 election it poured out of me. That it’s about trauma and bodily autonomy and eco-fascism and resource hoarding vs community care. That it’s feminist (dare I say…anti-romantasy?) fantasy that neither shies away from romantic love nor centers it. That it’s about stepping out of someone else’s narrative for you and writing your own story. That I hope you read it and remember you are a witch. I guess that’s saying quite a lot actually. Well. Anyway, I wrote a book! And I am so thankful to @erinleighharris and @mikaleek08 for championing it. 2028 here we come ✨✨✨ by @newmooneditorial

Rare cross-account post ✨ I am an editor, but I’m also a musician and it makes me a better editor every day. I understand a writer’s need to create. My creative fuel just lies in a different field. So my ego never gets tangled up in my clients’ work. I am always 100% focused on elevating their work to its highest, truest form. I am not remaking it in my image. My imagination goes into my art and I believe in nothing more than yours doing the same. I have new music out today and if you’d like to listen to it, I can’t help but think it’s probably a perfect #booktok romantasy soundtrack. That’s kind of what my music is. Last year as New Moon Editorial was coming up on her first birthday, I was shocked to learn that an editor I had respected from my former publishing house had left as well to strike out on her own, but had studied my website and offerings very closely in order to do so. She took more than inspiration, let’s say. I was hurt. Shocked. I had respected her very much. I debated what to do. I spoke with a legal colleague about taking action but ultimately decided against it. I didn’t want to give the issue too much oxygen. I made a video about the incident but did not name the editor or her new enterprise. But that was it. I realized after meditating on the issue that this endeavor of hers was not likely to last in this incarnation ✨because it wasn’t an original idea✨. Running a business is hard and the only reason most people are able to sustain it is because they have a vision. They sustain that vision and it sustains them. It’s hard enough doing your own thing, even though you love it—I knew it had to at least be twice as hard to sustain a vision that wasn’t originally yours. So I waited. Well, I blocked her and I waited. I don’t check on her often, but I did today. This all happened a little over a year ago. Today, I had mixed feelings as I discovered that her Instagram account was quiet, stalled. Her website had been left to expire. I don’t want to see another editor fail. That’s not what I’m saying at all. And I did and do wish her well (not in a GP way) as long as she does her own thing. There is room for everyone. As long as we are ourselves.

So when you think about sitting down to write your novel, try not to think “I want to write the next Crawdads” or “I want to be a New York Times bestseller.” Chances are, that is not going to be the mantra that keeps you writing early in the morning or late into the night, when you’ve got a billion things demanding your attention and bills to pay. What keeps a project alive is your ✨vision✨. Where do you find yours?

Happy Publication Day to @hdarwent and The Things We Do To Our Friends! This was the final book I acquired before leaving PRH. One of the hardest things about leaving to start New Moon Editorial was leaving this masterful, head-spinning novel behind (in the hands of some very talented editors at @randomhouse and across the pond at @vikingbooksuk). This is the perfect January read and I urge you to pick up a copy!

On another note, I’ve always loved seeing the difference between US and UK covers—the markets can be so different—and this is a pair I particularly love.

Reading this testimonial reminds me that a big revision can be daunting but you don’t have to go through it alone. In fact, I really wouldn’t recommend it! I love helping authors recognize the book within their manuscript and bring it to full potential. For that very reason, I’ve been called a book doula enough times for the name to stick and I’m proud of it!
