🌙🌧As October comes to an end, we say goodbye to the sun and to residents Annike Flo, Lexie Owen and Nora Adwan.

October has been unusually warm and wet, which has mostly called for indoor work. But on the best days, we have been out making the most of the disappearing daylight. Over the past two weeks, we have been filming in Adventdalen, fossil hunting by Longyearbreen, hiking to Platåfjellet, and Annike Flo and Lexie Owen have hosted an artist walk as part of their ongoing series «Walking with Death».

Next week, we welcome a new group of residents: Lina Machida, Dina Brode-Roger and Kristine Fornes. by @newo_eixel

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Necromantic Kitchen full moon gathering at Losæter and Gamlebyen cemetery!

Beginning in Gamlebyen cemetery, we walked with wild plant expert Kia Vulgaris, senior consultant at Gravplassetaten Snorre Utengen, and fagleder at Oslokompost Thomas Gabler, learning about how to care for the decay of those who have passed, how Oslo's compost systems circulate through the city (and back to its graveyards), and meeting some of the edible herbs growing among the graves.

From there we moved to Losæter for butter churning (and spanking), lefse baking, and the blending of herbs as offerings for our dead and for death itself, drawing on traditional Norwegian food culture as a way to practice regenerative necromancy.

Necromantic Kitchen forms part of our ongoing collaborative research project, Afterlives, which explores death through material culture, metabolism and decomposition. Rather than approaching death as an ending, the project asks how we might understand it as a generative force that continually reshapes the living world.

Thank you to everyone who walked, baked, gathered and shared the evening with us!

🪦

The event was a collaboration between artist duo Lexie Owen and Annike Flo, Kunstprogrammet på Losæter, Norwegian BioArt Arena, NOBA , and Gravplassetaten. The event was supported by Oslo Kommune and Sparebankstiftelsen DNB by @newo_eixel

Join us tonight (30.Juni) for Necromantic Kitchen @losaeter for this month's full moon gathering!

We will start the evening with a gravplass vandring at Gamlebyen Gravlund (meeting at 5pm) focusing on regeneration and the metabolic processes of the graveyard.

We will be joined by wild plant expert Kia Vulgaris, senior consultant at gravplassetaten Snorre Utengen, and fagleder at Oslokompost Thomas Gabler.

>>> guest bios

Snorre K Utengen is a gardener with 30 years of experience in the industry. Many of these years he has been a gardener teacher and has a great desire to strengthen the level of knowledge about gardens, parks and nature. Today he works as a senior consultant in the Graveyards Agency. He is particularly interested in communicating the connection between what happens above ground with trees and plants, and what happens below ground (degradation and soil conditions)

Thomas Gabler is fagleder in Oslokompost, the is the section of the Renovation and Recycling Agency that processes garden waste and produces compost in the municipality of Oslo.

Kia Vulgaris is a certified wild plant expert and has extensive experience with wild plant foods. She currently works as an urban farmer in Losæter, and lives in the forest outside Oslo with her family.

>>> about Necromantic Kitchen

Necromantic Kitchen explores how we can develop an understanding of death not as an ending, but rather as the beginning of a transformative, generative, and creative process.

We work to link practices of mourning and grieving to processes of metabolism, both in terms of human digestion, everyday kitchen magic like fermentation and the action of decomposition, which turns organic matter into soil.

Through this work we take an expanded approach to the concept of necromancy, reading the term openly as a re-activation or re-animation of that which has been considered dead. By applying this concept to to different knowledges, cultural phenomena, relations and materials we seek to develop a non-extractive mode of necromancy that troubles the false binary of life/death, bringing us closer to an understanding of the intricate and interwoven relationship between the two. by @newo_eixel

Connecting the soil of the graveyard with the soil of the urban farm, thinking regenerative necromancy through digestive metabolisms, come and celebrate this solstice strawberry moon with artist duo Annike Flo + Lexie Owen.

For this Full Moon Gathering Flo + Owen will bring their ongoing creative research project Necromantic Kitchen to Losæter with an evening of participatory events in two parts. You are welcome to join for either or both.

Dress according to the weather.

PART ONE: Graveyard Walk at Gamlebyen gravlund
17:00 – Meet at the graveyard at the Oslogate/Ekebergveien entrance. Gravplassetaten will join us.

The first half of the evening unfolds at Gamlebyen gravlund with a gravplass vandring focusing on regeneration and the metabolic processes of the graveyard. Participants and invited guests will explore the site together, and will arrive at Losæter in time for the second half of the event.

PART TWO: offerings for the dead
Meet at Losæter at 19:00

The second half of the evening unfolds at the urban farm, where Flo + Owen will facilitate the opportunity to participate in an offering to the dead, reengaging with traditional Norwegian food craft, including lefse, butter making, and herbal tea blending. If participants have a particular deceased person they would like to make a tea offering for they are encouraged to bring an element they relate to that person to add to their own tea blend.
Through this evening at Losæter the duo will continue their ongoing practice exploring what it means to enter into dialogue with death as a creative and transformative force. The evening will be concluded with a closing ritual performed by the artists. by @newo_eixel

Lexie Owen is a Canadian artist living and working in Norway who self-publishes artist books and zines, focusing primarily on risograph printing.

Her publications are often an extension of her broader artistic practice, exploring questions of intimacy and care, collectivity and the boundaries of the self. She is interested in thinking about what it means to self-archive, and also produces books in collaboration with other queer/feminist artists under the imprint pillowfort press. by @newo_eixel

On September 12th, as part of their project Necromantic Kitchen, artistic duo Annike Flo + Lexie Owen hosted a graveyard wander with soil scientist Inghild Økland and other guests.

This interdisciplinary wander through Gamle Aker Kirkegård was part of the group exhibition Hanging Garden at Tenthaus, curated by Slekke.

Flo + Owen’s joint artistic practice is focused on the meeting points between material death cultures, biological processes of decomposition, and magic. They seek to reclaim the notion of “Necromancy,” understanding it historically as a pejorative descriptor used to vilify pre/non-christian burial and grieving practices. In this notion, the artists find the possibility to develop grieving practices that account the ongoingness of death – both in grief and grieving, and in the recirculation of the energetic potential of our bodies into soil.

During the graveyard wandering the artists shared their research, bringing along interdisciplinary viewpoints of the transformative magic of soil, and the handling of our dead from Inghild Økland, Søren Erik Jakobsen and Kristin Lian.

This event was produced in collaboration between Oslo Kommune Gravplassetaten and Tenthaus Gallery, with support from Billedkunstnernes Vederlagsfond. This graveyard wander was part of Oslo kulturnatt.

The central core of Annike Flo + Lexie Owen’s Necromantic Kitchen is a participatory workshop. The project is part of the group exhibition Hanging Garden. Registration required: link in bio.

Guiding attendees through their research into death, dying, and decomposition using a practice they have come to call Material Necromancy, the duo invite you to join them in sitting closer with death and the deceased.

Over the course of Hanging Garden, this full-day workshop will be offered three times:
Tuesday 16.September, 10:00-15:00
Wednesday 17.September, 16:00-21:00
Saturday 20.September,10:00-15:00

Participation is limited to 5 attendees per workshop, and a vegetarian meal will be provided.

Attendees are asked to bring with them a food item to share that reminds them / brings them closer to someone who has died, and to come with some ideas of a deceased person they would like to invite to join the workshop with them. This is an open invitation–the deceased guest could be a close or beloved one, but could also be an intellectual ancestor. The guest should be someone participants would like to feel closer to, or be in conversation with.

During the workshop the duo offer insight into their reclamation of the term Necromancy, which they understand broadly as an intention practice which brings them closer to their ancestors, be they familial, intellectual or chosen. Participants will then be guided through a series of activities that pair reflection with activation of the senses of taste, smell and touch. Through this work they hope to offer a space for thinking, sensing and working creatively with grief, grieving and mourning. The duo see these processes as a key to developing practices that reflect the ongoingness of death and our relationships with those that have departed.

More information about what will happen over the course of the workshop is available through link in bio. by @newo_eixel

ANNIKE FLO + LEXIE OWEN have worked collaboratively as an artistic duo since 2022, while also maintaining independent practices. Lexie’s independent work focuses on social practice, and the development of structures that support collaboration and collaborative actions, while Annike’s is focused on material explorations that unfold relationships between the human and non-human. Together they are interested in understanding how a social practice might work when removed from a focus on the anthropocentric, inviting in the agencies of other entities from living organisms to “inanimate” beings such as rocks. Practically their work unfolds in a variety of manners, including participatory performances, workshops, interactive installations and publications.

At Tenthaus, Annike & Lexie present their new project titled THE NECROMANTIC KITCHEN. Thinking back to a time when death and dying were domestic processes, when death was always a guest in our houses, Necromantic Kitchen connects the metabolic action of decomposition with human digestion and everyday kitchen magic — fermentation, and other transformative food processes such as butter churning.
