Karin Lovelius @karinlovelius_singsopera as Klytaemnestra in their concert performance of Richard Strauss’ monumental tragedy and operatic masterpiece Elektra.

“Karin Lovelius as Klytämnestra is a natural phenomenon. She is torn, eaten, ruined, lurking and haunted in her singing and acting, crushed by the shadows of her actions. Her dark timbre has many colors and a clear diction. An impressive role interpretation.” Peter Korfmacher, LVZ 2024

Katya Kabanova, 19 July 2026, St John’s Waterloo. This was a concert performance of Katya (in Norman Tucker’s English translation). Fine singing was its strength

Philippa Boyle @philippa.boyle Katya is an ideal role for her very strong, secure voice; and she acted the part well too.
The other standout singer was Dutch-Canadian tenor James Schouten @schouten92 He was most impressive as Boris.
Australian/Mauritian mezzo-soprano Lauren Easton @laureneaston_mezzo sang a strong and stern mother-in-law.
Jonathan Finney @newpalaceopera was a suitably wimpish son.

The minor roles were all very well taken: I much admired Joanna Harries @joannaharries as Varvara, impish and frivolous, with a delightful voice, particularly in her folk song.
Robin Whitehouse @whitehouse3754 as Vanya sang his Czech folk-style song to perfection.
Ashley Mercer @_mercer_ashley made a properly ridiculous Dikoi, strongly voiced.
Caroline Carragher @carolinecarraghermezzosoprano completed the team of characters with distinction. Photo credit: Lauren Easton taken in St John's Church, Waterloo by @newpalaceopera
