NEWS Source: A single helicopter – the Bell 407 – was in service when the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) launched its search and rescue operations hours after receiving reports that a passenger vessel – the MV Barima – was in distress out at sea on night of July 18.

This is according to GDF Captain Simon Gordon, who appeared before the MV Barima Commission of Inquiry (COI) today at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).

Captain Gordon, who assists with assembling both crew and aircraft, in addition to maintaining flight logs, told the Commission that the GDF’s Air Corps fleet includes three helicopters – a Bell 412, a Bell 407 and a Bell 429.

However, in direct response to series of questions posed by Commissioner Hayden Pritchard, Captain Gordon disclosed that between July 19 when the GDF dispatched the first helicopter to the disaster site, and July 27 only the Bell 407 – a single engine helicopter – was “serviceable.”

NEWS Source: The Coast Guard Officer who spearheaded the first search and rescue operation from the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard Pomeroon Base, testified at the MV Barima Commission of Inquiry on Thursday that the first set of survivors were rescued just off the Essequibo Coast, even as the Coast Guard was dealing with changing coordinates and a malfunctioning Global Positioning System (GPS).

Petty Officer Deon Smith was among a number of Coast Guard Officers who appeared before the MV Barima Commission of Inquiry (COI) at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on Thursday.

Smith testified that at approximately 11 pm on July 18, 2026, he received a text message from the Duty Officer at the Coast Guard Headquarters in Georgetown informing him that a vessel was in distress.

NEWS Source: Avalon Gold Exploration Incorporated has begun discussions with the Linden Technical Institute (LTI) on potential training opportunities to prepare potential workers for employment at the proposed re-development of the Omai Gold Project.

The new Omai Gold Project is forecast to support about 1,200 jobs during construction and between 800 and 850 direct jobs during operations.

The discussions form part of the company’s efforts to incorporate local content and workforce development into its planning, as it advances technical, environmental and regulatory work for the proposed project in Region Seven.

NEWS Source: Moments after being released on bail this afternoon, Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, expressed concern for his safety.

Speaking to reporters at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Mr. Mohamed said the full extent of what happened should be released from nearby CCTV cameras, saying that there was a clear intention to kill him.

Mr. Mohamed said he and his two staff members came under fire moments after he took out his phone and started recording in the vicinity of Narine’s home.
