NEWS Source: Police Update on murder of 6-year-old Berbice boy

"Police in Regional Division #5 are investigating the alleged murder of Orlando Jaikarran, 6, who was previously reported missing on Thursday October 15, 2026, at Waterloo Main Canal, West Coast Berbice.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the child was reportedly taken to the canal, where he was allegedly dealt a chop to the neck with a cutlass.

As part of the investigation, Police conducted further investigations on Tuesday October 20, 2026, during which information was obtained concerning the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Acting on information received, a search party comprising Police ranks and civilians conducted a search of the Waterloo Main Canal on Tuesday October 20, 2026, during which the partially decomposed body of a male child, suspected to be that of Orlando Jaikarran, was discovered.

An examination of the body revealed that the head was missing, along with portions of the left hand and right foot.

The body was subsequently escorted to the Bath Regional Hospital, where it was examined by a doctor who pronounced the child dead. It was then taken to Bailey’s Funeral Home, where it is awaiting formal identification and a post-mortem examination.

Two males have been arrested and are in police custody assisting with the ongoing investigation."

Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett embodies this.

I have known Carolyn since long before the world knew her name.

Her journey started in our native Guyana, where her Amerindian (Indigenous) heritage inspired her early career serving our Amerindian people through the Social Impact Amelioration Programme.

I had the gift of witnessing and learning from her work firsthand, on the ground in Guyana’s Amerindian communities, throughout the interior and the Amazon rainforest.

Her development work included providing healthcare, education, microfinance, economic sustainability, opportunity, access and human rights.

I saw lines of people waiting to seek help from Carolyn. I watched her meet every person with care and empathy to address their needs.

She went on to become Minister of Amerindian Affairs, then Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, before taking on an international leadership role with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

Subsequently, Carolyn became Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations. In 2024, Guyana returned to the UN Security Council as an elected member for the first time in more than four decades. Carolyn led Guyana’s delegation throughout its two year tenure, through two presidencies of the Council, and chaired key Security Council committees.

Her career of service began with our Amerindian people, expanded to Guyana, South America, the Caribbean and Latin America, and for more than a decade, to people all around the world.

Now that girl born in Moruca, Guyana, is a leading candidate to become the next Secretary General of the United Nations.

An enduring reminder that anything is possible!

🇬🇾 Protecting Natural Systems, Strengthening Food Security🙏

Hon. Vickram Bharrat, M.P., Minister of Natural Resources of Guyana, highlighted the growing threat drought poses to food security, water security, biodiversity and economic stability.

Speaking at the Ministerial Dialogue 🗣️on Drought Resilience at UNCCD COP17 in Mongolia, Minister Bharrat emphasized that Guyana’s resilience is rooted in the interconnected relationship between water, land, forests, biodiversity, agriculture and people.

He underscored the importance of protecting Guyana’s natural systems and its capacity for food self-sufficiency, while calling for greater international investment in drought preparedness, resilient food systems, healthy soils, water security and nature-based solutions.

🚨🚨**UPDATE!!!!!**🚨🚨

BREAKING NEWS: The Guyana Police Force this morning filed 72 murder charges against the rescued Captain and a crew member from the MV Barima ferry tragedy, along with the Loading Superintendent from the Transport and Harbours Department.

The three men, 40-year-old Kevin Price, 42-year-old Rondell Dwayne Roberts, and 33-year-old Delon Granderson appeared in Court this morning and were remanded to jail following their appearance.

Granderson was the Loading Superintendent.

The MV Barima ferry sank on the night of Saturday 18th July during its journey from Georgetown to Port Kaituma.

The rescued Captain and one crew member were taken into custody after the Government said traces of a narcotic were reportedly found in their system during medical checks after the tragedy.

Reflecting on my journey, I’m constantly reminded of how deeply my roots and upbringing shaped the woman I’ve become today.

I grew up in a small village in Berbice, Guyana 🇬🇾 . At 16 years old, I left Guyana for the United States with big dreams, determination, and the hope of creating a better future for myself and my family. I still remember not attending my high school graduation because I was preparing to migrate just days later.

Although the journey came with many sacrifices and challenges, I never forgot where I came from. The values rooted in my upbringing in Guyana such as resilience, faith, humility, discipline, and perseverance became the foundation that guided me through every challenge on this journey to medicine.

Becoming a doctor represents far more than personal success. It represents my family, my community, and my country. No matter where life takes me, I will always carry my Guyanese roots with me.

A little Guyanese girl dared to dream, worked tirelessly, and became a doctor and this one’s for my country.
