Carl Vine's Sawtooth was commissioned in 2023 by the Nexas Quartet with the generous support of patrons Carmen Jarrett and Kathie and Reg Grinberg.

The title refers to the sawtooth waveform a shape associated with the sound wave produced by a saxophone. Vine uses this as a conceptual starting point for exploring the instrument's contrasting qualities: smoothness and roughness, fluidity and sharpness, lyricism and aggression.

The world premiere took place on 10 November 2023 at The Neilson, ACO Pier 2/3, in Sydney. The quartet have performed the work numerous times in Australia and significantly at the World Saxophone Congress in Harbin China in 2025. by @nexasquartet

Thank you to everyone who came along to our ‘Romeo & Juliet’ concert at the Opera House. Was such a thrill to revisit so many amazing works 10 years after we first performed them. The highlight was performing Matthew Hindson’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ suite with the composer in the audience!

10 years ago, we gave the world premiere of Matthew Hindon’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ Suite. The first iteration came as ballet production with saxophone quartet and violin. We loved this work so much we asked Matthew to adapt this into a concert suite for us. Since then, we have recorded the suite (on our debut album - Current) and performed it all over the world (including the World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb, Croatia).

Come along on May 14th to hear this fabulous work amongst our ‘Romeo & Juliet’ inspired program at the Sydney Opera House. Ticket link available in our bio.

Prokofiev’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’ is described by Orrin Howard and Jim Svejda as a “carefully molded musical and emotional structure in which the music is not only intimately related to the stage action but is also a self-referential dramatic construct which can readily stand on its own”.

Nexas has adapted this work for the concert platform. The listener can hear the drama and emotional turmoil within as it reflects the story of the “star-crossed lovers”.

Bernstein’s iconic musical West Side Story is a modern day reimagination of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. A classic tale which has been set in 20th century New York City. The score features a blend of jazz, Latin and symphonic music and features some of Bernstein’s most memorable songs.
