Here, you’re watching new pieces take shape in real time as part of Next Fest’s annual Composer/Choreographer Workshop. Each year, our Composer, Choreographer, and Performance Fellows collide across disciplines- creating bold new work from scratch in just a few days, culminating in an open showing of ideas fresh from the studio. No finished pieces. Just bold ideas, under the mentorship of @peteraskim, GRAMMY-winning composer @aaronkernis, and Bessie-nominated choreographer @sidrabelldancenewyork. Whispers of a familiar tune waft through your car’s radio, distorted by static. As you near a local radio tower, the signal grows clearer and stronger. The song bursts forth at last. A moment from my piece “Interstate Signals,” recorded brilliantly by the 2026 @next_fest fellows and @peteraskim. by @next_fest

Join us in a glamorous Chelsea loft for a sparkling afternoon of music, conversation, and cocktails, all in support of an amazing cause. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4 4-6pm Chelsea, NYC (TBA) RSVP: [link in bio] curtisstewartnextfest.eventbrite.com The event will feature an intimate performance by 7-time GRAMMY nominee @curtis.stewart_violin, playing new work recently highlighted in The New York Times. Following the music, Stewart will sit down with composer, conductor, and Next Fest founder @peteraskim to discuss his creative process and expansion of the classical music canon. Guests will enjoy light fare, wine, prosecco, and a bespoke signature cocktail (and mocktail!) paired to Stewart’s music. Every ticket directly supports our mission to provide early-career string players, composers, and choreographers the chance to attend a world-class festival at a price they can afford. As Askim notes, we never "fund our work on the backs of young artists" — which is why we rely on the incredible generosity of friends and donors like you to make this program a reality. #party #fundraiser #nonprofitlife #fundraisingevent #contemporaryclassical taken in Chelsea, Manhattan by @next_fest

From Next Fest to the @ivalasquartet! Huge congratulations to Next Fest alum and Alumni Coordinator Adeline Baban on her appointment as the Ivalas Quartet’s new second violinist! (not to mention this stellar feature in @the_strad_) The Ivalas Quartet is a @juilliardschool-trained ensemble with residencies and fellowships at @kaufmanmusiccenter, the @nyphilharmonic, and @thenewschool. We couldn’t be more thrilled to see Adeline’s artistry, creativity, and community-building spirit take center stage in this exciting new chapter. Here’s to an incredible season ahead- and many more stages to come! 📸: @frameforager #violinist #violinplayer #quartet #nycmusic #stringmusic taken in New York, New York by @next_fest

(sound on) Enjoy the behind the scenes suspense of preparing a New York Premiere. Here we are rehearsing @niloufar.nourbakhsh's new piece “For Love Seemed Easy at First”, inspired by family ties stretched across three continents. Developed during a few short days at @ps21chatham, and led by Next Fest Founder @peteraskim, this was moments before premiering the work at @nationalsawdust in Brooklyn! Stay tuned (figuratively and literally). There is more to come! #contemporaryclassical #orchestra #musicrehearsal #orchestral #nycmusic by @next_fest

(sound on) Listen as this piece moves from dreamlike to sweeping and cinematic in record time. Here's a bird's eye view from behind @garrettarney.percussion as we rehearsed the WORLD PREMIERE of @andreacasarrubios’ The Book of Signatures with soloist @tommy_j_mesa at @ps21chatham. This deeply moving double concerto for cello, percussion, and strings is inspired by the disappearing art of handwriting and the search for authentic human connection in a digital age. #contemporaryclassical #orchestra #xylophone #musicrehearsal #orchestral taken in PS21 : Center for Contemporary Performance by @next_fest

Help us celebrate Next Fest board member and former Guest Artist Curtis Stewart in @nytimes for 24 American Caprices, his wildly imaginative rethinking of the violin caprice through the kaleidoscope of American music. From Earth, Wind & Fire and Kendrick Lamar to Duke Ellington and Aretha Franklin, Curtis turns the traditions of classical violin inside out, bringing the full breadth of American musical life into the concert hall. Congratulations, Curtis! #nytimes #violinist #americanmusic #stringmusic #composer taken in New York, New York by @next_fest
