Whispers of a familiar tune waft through your car’s radio, distorted by static. As you near a local radio tower, the signal grows clearer and stronger. The song bursts forth at last.

A moment from my piece “Interstate Signals,” recorded brilliantly by the 2026 @next_fest fellows and @peteraskim.

Congratulations to @adie.baban! FANHS-MNY's 2026 Distinguished Young Professional Awardee! 🏆🎻

This award honors a leader under 30 who has empowered our community and uplifted the next generation, and Adeline embodies that in every way. She's the Executive Director and co-founder of the Westside Chamber Players, a young artist-led chamber orchestra that has brought over 60 free programs to the NY metro area since 2022 and made its Carnegie Hall debut this past April.

A celebrated violinist, Adeline has served as Concertmaster with the GRAMMY Award-winning New York Youth Symphony, Manhattan Symphony Orchestra, and Mannes Orchestra, and champions contemporary music that diversifies the classical canon, including Filipino folk song transcriptions by Gilopez Kabayao. She's performed at the Kennedy Center, The Tonight Show, Radio City Music Hall, and the Philippine and Argentine Embassies. 🇵🇭

Congratulations, Adeline, we're so proud to celebrate you! 👏✨
Please join us to celebrate Adeline and all of our 2026 honorees!

🌤️Thu’s Summer Thoughts

Storytelling has always been a big reason why I play the cello and why I decided to become a musician. In honor of the first experience joining a new music festival (shoutout to @next_fest) and the start of my summer folklore, here are a few things I have learned from playing and performing new music in the last five years:

✨Openness
Every new score feels like learning a new language. It asks me to let go of assumptions, listen differently, and stay curious. I found this one particularly hard to achieve since I have always been very single-minded in pursuing what I believe is right. New music has challenged that part of me in the best possible way!
✨ Boldness
New music invites experimentation. There are techniques that aren’t often taught or seen in classical music and because of that, I was forced to step out of my comfort zone, encouraged to make artistic choices, and ultimately discovered my own voice.
✨ Comfort with Imperfection
Bringing a new work to life is full of trial and error. You try ideas that don’t work, revise them, and try again. I’ve learned this process through dozens of collaborations with living composers and over time, have come to accept that it is part of the art. It humbled me.
✨ Joy
Like any other music, the joy is what keeps me coming back to it. I’m still very much rooted in my classical training and the traditional repertoire, but why not explore something new? Something different?

How about you? What’s your take on this genre?
