I see this a lot. Someone comes in saying they're 'fine, just tired.' And then we sit with what tired actually means. Not sleep-deprived tired. The kind where you're moving through your days like you're watching yourself from the outside.

There's a part holding it all together. And there are parts underneath that have been trying to get your attention for a long time. Depression doesn't always look like can't-get-out-of-bed. Sometimes it looks like perfectly functional on the outside, completely numb on the inside.

If you're asking yourself whether what you're feeling counts, that's already your answer. You don't need permission to stop carrying this alone.

What does 'fine' actually mean for you right now?

Numbness gets mistaken for resilience all the time. You're holding it together, ticking boxes, looking fine. But inside? Static. Grey. A kind of functional emptiness that nobody talks about because it doesn't look dramatic enough to count.

But it does count. And it makes sense. Your system did what it had to do to keep you upright. The managers stepped in, created distance, locked the pain away. They're still doing their job. The problem is, they're so good at it you've lost access to everything else too.

The way back isn't about bulldozing through. It's about slowly, carefully getting to know the parts that have been holding the line. What are they protecting? What do they need to trust it's safe to soften?

That's the work. Not quick. Not tidy. But real.

Does this land for you?

Dissociation doesn't always look like spacing out or losing time. Sometimes it's functional. You're getting things done, ticking boxes, showing up. But there's a flatness underneath. A sense that you're going through the motions while the part of you that makes it matter has quietly stepped away.

At some point, staying fully present became too much. A part of you learned to leave, just enough to make it through. And it worked. It got you through something unbearable. But now that same protective exit is still running in the background, even when the original threat is long gone.

The work isn't about forcing yourself back. It's about slowing down enough to notice when you've left. And understanding what that part of you has been trying to protect you from all this time.

Does any of this land for you?

Freeze gets misunderstood. People see it as checking out, shutting down, not caring enough to engage. But it's the opposite. It's your nervous system caring so much about your survival that it overrides everything else.

The parts of you that learned to go still, to disappear, to stop speaking, they're not broken. They adapted to conditions where speaking wasn't safe. And they're still here, doing what they know how to do.

The work isn't about forcing yourself to speak up or pushing through it. It's about meeting those parts. Building enough safety, in relationship, that your system can start to feel like there's another option.

Slowly. At your pace. Without the shame that usually comes with it.

What does freeze feel like for you when it shows up?

People often apologise in the first session for not having the words. For rambling. For crying. For going blank.

There's a part that believes you need to arrive with your pain neatly summarised, like you're making a case for why you deserve to be there.

You don't.

The mess is information. The moments where words won't come, where your throat tightens, where you feel exposed, that's not you failing. That's a part protecting you from something that feels too big to name yet.

We don't force it. We meet what shows up, at your pace.

The room is already yours.

What stops you from reaching out for support when you need it?

A lot of people wait for the right reason to start therapy. The perfect explanation. A crisis big enough to justify it.

But most of the time, people come because something feels off. They can't name it, but it's there. A tension. A sense of going through the motions. A part of them that's tired of holding it all together.

That's enough.

The first session isn't about fixing anything. It's about creating space for what's been trying to get your attention. We slow things down. We get curious. And we see what shows up.

You don't need the right words. You just need to be willing to start.

What's one thing that feels off for you right now?

Your people-pleasing part isn't a character flaw. It's a protection system that learned early that your needs created problems.

It still believes that if you say no, if you centre yourself, someone will leave. So it keeps you small. Keeps you useful. Keeps you safe the only way it knows how.

Emotional numbness as protection, not failure.

The firefighter part that shuts you down is not broken. It is responding to something real. To exiles underneath that still hold pain you could not process when it happened.

It does not know how to let you feel a little. So it gives you flat. Distant. Nothing.

You are not one comment away from losing it because you lack self control.

A part of you is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It would rather you burn bridges than let you touch the vulnerability that once had no protection. Anger kept you alive. It still thinks it has to.

Guilt that follows you everywhere isn't responding to your behaviour.

It's a protective part trying to manage a belief an exile took on long ago: that you're fundamentally the problem. The manager works overtime to make sure you're never as bad as that buried part believes you are.

When therapy makes things harder, most people think they are doing it wrong.

Your system has been working flat out to keep the pain manageable. The part that keeps you busy. The part that numbs you out. The part scanning for danger. When you build something safe, those protectors begin to trust they do not have to work this hard anymore. So they step back. And everything they were holding comes forward.

The part doesn't just want acknowledgment. It wants someone to turn toward it instead of filing it away.

It has a history. It's protecting something. And until you sit with it long enough to hear what it's carrying, nothing shifts.
