What does it mean to be “truly” Guatemalan, especially on a day of national identity like today (Guatemalan Independence Day)? In this special issue of the Maya America Journal, we use essays, interviews, film, poetry, and research to tackle this question.

Our goal with this issue was to rewrite the narrative of Guatemalan adoption in our own voices, as Guatemalan adoptees, from our own perspectives. We are rewriting the narrative of not only what it means to be an adoptee, but what it means to be Guatemalan, American, Canadian, European, and all our other adopted nationalities. This issue is pulled from our vastly different experiences growing up all over the world, but still holds threads that connect us: a loss of language, a loss of identity, and learning how to embrace the new identities that were birthed, if we want to at all.

This collection of writing about Guatemalan adoption from the perspective of those who’ve lived it is the first of its kind, but, hopefully, far from the last.

Meet Alicia Sylvester, a Guatemalan adoptee from Minnesota. She is a rising senior at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University(@csbsju), where she is pursuing a double major in Psychology and Music.

Alicia is conducting a study examining the social adjustment and mental health of transnational and transracial Guatemalan adoptees, with a specific focus on how being placed in predominantly white communities affects their overall mental health, cultural identity and exploring, and sense of belonging. Her goal is to bring meaningful attention to the importance of adoptee mental health and well-being a topic that has long been overlooked in the academic literature.

All participants in her study will have the opportunity to receive compensation for their time, and all data will be collected, stored, and handled in full accordance with the American Psychological Association’s ethical guidelines.

Alicia is available to provide any additional information about her study, share a copy of the questionnaire once approved, or connect directly to discuss in further questions.

In observance of Adoptee Remembrance Day, we are invited to remember the members of the Guatemalan adoptee community who have passed away. Whether we got to meet them or not, every loss is significant.

Our Mayan ancestors had and have a reverence for death as a complement to life and transition that was not to be feared.

Artist and educator @josemariodellow’s film Extract from a conversation between two Guatemalan adoptees: Part 2 (2025) is the second iteration in an ongoing series of dialogues between the artist and fellow Guatemalan adoptees. Exploring their experiences of international adoption and growing up in the UK, the film layers conversation with photographs from the artist’s personal adoption archive and digital screen grabs of Guatemalan people, objects, and places, including Jutiapa, the Guatemalan department that is the shared birthplace of both the film’s speakers. Here, Dellow revisits a format they first explored several years ago, reflectively tracing the subjects’ evolving relationships to their adoption stories.

Where are spaces of isolation, anxiety, and safety for transracial international adoptees (TRIAs)? Do we have any in common?

In her thesis, “Places of Othering and Safety Among Transracial International Adoptees [TRIAs]: Urban Versus Non-Urban Environments and the Conceptual Framework of Third Space,” @sulmi.rm interviews NGG community members and fellow TRIAs to learn if these spaces vary among urban, suburban and small town environments. Her research methods include mental maps, interviews, and the social theory of third space.

An adoptee from Guatemala herself, Sulmi is sharing her thesis and is open to feedback from the community!

Daniel was smart and funny, but his greatest gift was his friendship. He was kind and loyal to both new acquaintances and lifelong friends. These relationships brought joy to Daniel’s life.

Daniel loved all creatures and, from the time he was a little boy, aspired to be a veterinarian.

Following a recent public apology by President @bernardoarevalogt and the @guatemalagob for the history of irregular adoptions in Guatemala, and the subsequent investigation by @voxpopuliguate_, adoptees from the Next Generation Guatemala community voted to share a public statement voicing concern and urging action against continued irregularities in adoption from Guatemala.
