Back pain and inflammation are common in horses, especially senior horses. Age-related changes can contribute to discomfort through the back, including:

• Reduced topline muscle and spinal support • Decreased flexibility through the thoracolumbar region • Chronic muscle tension and stiffness • Inflammatory changes associated with joint wear and compensation

PEMF is used as a supportive wellness modality to help:

EQUINE ANATOMY SERIES • 01 🐴
Distal Forelimb Soft Tissue Anatomy

Here’s what’s actually happening under your horse’s skin when you run your hand down their leg 👇🏼

🤍 Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon (SDFT)
The most superficial tendon on the back of the cannon bone. Flexes the pastern and fetlock joints.

🤍 Deep Digital Flexor Tendon (DDFT)
Sits deeper than the SDFT and travels all the way into the hoof, attaching to the coffin bone.

🤍 Suspensory Ligament
Starts high on the back of the cannon bone and splits into branches lower down. Helps stabilize the fetlock joint.

🤍 Extensor Branch of the Suspensory Ligament
Peels off the suspensory ligament and wraps toward the front of the leg, joining the extensor tendon.

🤍 Superficial Distal Sesamoidean Ligament
Continues down from the sesamoid bones. Helps prevent the fetlock joint from overextending.

💡 The suspensory ligament and SDFT both act like springs, storing and releasing energy with every stride. In a galloping Thoroughbred, strain on the SDFT can reach up to 16%.

A lot of what we see this time of year comes back to inflammation. Sensitivity, itching, changes in the skin and coat are often tied to how the body is responding to allergens.

Red and near infrared light have been studied for their role in supporting circulation and cellular activity. This can help the body better manage irritation and inflammation in affected areas.

I use the ROC red light to focus on specific spots where a horse (or dog) is showing sensitivity or changes in skin or coat condition.

It is strong, targeted, and easy to use alongside PEMF, so I can be specific without making sessions longer.

Not a quick fix, just a consistent way to support the body through seasonal changes. 🌷🌱🫶🏻🌱🌷
