Inspiring youth to explore their world through photography.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Storytelling through photography is one of the most powerful tools to make positive change in our world.

During Photo Camp, students harness this skill in a week-long immersive workshop with #NatGeoExplorers and photographers who mentor these young people throughout their Photo Camp experience.

We are proud to foster a community of innovative and inquisitive storytellers!

In honor of #WorldStorytellingDay, we’d love to hear the story you are passionate about telling. Tell us in the comments! by @ngphotocamp

August 19 is recognized as #WorldPhotographyDay - an annual, worldwide celebration of the art, craft, science and history of photography.

In celebration of this occasion, we’re highlighting photos of National Geographic Photo Camp Founder and #NatGeoExplorer in Residence @kirstenelstner sharing the power of photography with young people at Photo Camps around the world.

In the introduction to her book, “Photo Camp Stories” she wrote “Over the past 20 years, thousands of young people at National Geographic Photo Camps have been guided by photographers eager to share their knowledge, but just as eager to learn and to be inspired in return. I’ve come to believe that there’s no doubt: Stories can change lives.”

Happy World Photography Day!

Stay tuned for more #WorldPhotographyDay celebrations!

That’s a wrap on Photo Camp Sitka!

From the rainforest to the ocean to the community, students shared their incredible photography highlighting identity and their relationship to the culture and nature in Alaska. They presented their work to friends and family at the Odess Theatre in the Sitka Fine Arts Center.

Denise Gonzales shares her perspective on living in Alaska as a young Filipino woman:

“Alaska has given me more than I expected, from opportunities to grow, become more independent, and relationships that connect me to my community. In Sitka, I've learned that connection can be found in nature, in the kindness of others, and in the simple moments we share. However, living away from home has also made me feel distant from parts of my own culture, including the traditions, language, and dances that connect me to where I come from. While Alaska has given me a place to grow and discover new parts of myself, it has also made me realize how important it is to hold on to my roots. I want to show both sides of my experience: the connections I made in Alaska and the cultural connections I sometimes miss. I’ve learned that I can embrace new opportunities and build relationships in a new place without forgetting the people, traditions, and memories that shaped who I am.”

Photo Camp Sitka was part of a series of Photo Camps being supported through the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic Fund, which is contributed to by travelers on National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions (@lindbladexp).

In collaboration with Alaska Whale Foundation (@alaska_whale_foundation), this week’s Photo Camp was led by #NatGeoExplorers Pat Kane (@patkanephoto), Evgenia Arbugaeva (@evgenia_arbugaeva), Lauren Eckert (@laureneckert.art), Nestor Wilkinson, Photo Camp founder and Explorer-in-Residence Kirsten Elstner (@kirstenelstner), National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions Certified Photo Instructors and local photographers, Kim Nesbitt (@nesbittphotography) and Sean Neilson (@glacierbayphoto).

Photo Camp Sitka continues!

For their assignments, students explored creative self-expression and local connections. They experimented with nature through fern leaf self-portraits, captured wildlife like a gyrfalcon/peregrine falcon hybrid at the Alaska Raptor Center, and played with light—from magenta glows and projected hand-hearts to natural shore silhouettes.

And that’s a wrap on Photo Camp Indiana!

Students finished their time with their group photo story presentations followed by a slideshow showcasing their photography for friends, family, and community members. After presenting his work in the final show, Jack Jernigan reflects on his experience at camp:

“How significant Photo Camp was to me is something I can’t seem to describe with words. Bonding with people over photography and making relationships through photography is something special that I can’t seem to find anywhere else.”

Before departing from Photo Camp, Branden Woods concludes:

“The Nat Geo Photo Camp was something unexpected. Occasionally, opportunities pop up in life but you never know how significant an experience may be for you, this was one of those. The connections I made this week are some of the most beautiful people I’ve ever met and because of that I don’t regret a single second I spent at Photo Camp.”

Photo Camp Indiana was part of a series across the U.S. in collaboration with National Geographic Education for students to engage with National Geographic Explorers to learn photography and writing skills, build connections within their communities and understand the power of geography to tell the stories of their past, present and future.

This week’s Photo Camp was conducted in collaboration with Earth Charter Indiana (@earthcharterindiana) and led by #NatGeoExplorers Matt Moyer (@mattmoyerphoto), Nova West (@novawest_creative) Guerchom Ndebo (@guerchomndebo) and Nicolas Diaz-Magaloni (@nico_magaloni).

Photo Camp Indiana completed their final day in the field exploring the waterfalls of McCormick's Creek State Park. Braelyn Cooper reflects on her time creating photographs in nature:

“Immersing myself in nature reminded me of why I began taking photos in the first place. It’s easy to get lost in your head when I’d rather be lost in the woods. Being able to ground myself in the freedom of unstructured nature photography was like taking a breath of fresh air.”

Photo Camp Indiana is well underway! While on assignment students explored Bloomington and Indiana State University with their cameras.

Gabriela Kirschbaum poetically reflected on how her time with Photo Camp has changed how she "paints" with her camera:

“Both the light and lack thereof sing together for the symphony of every picture, be the conductor.”
