Next up at Nine: Curmudgeon presents Tales from the Crypt, opening Friday, October 9, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Nine
112 Madison St
New York, NY 10002

Tales From the Crypt, a classic horror anthology that runs from October 9th through October 27th..The exhibition features seven artists: Richard Medina, Seung-Jun Lee, Andrew Hammell Race, Petros Lales, Aaron Nemec, Douglas Paisley, and Tamsen Williams. Each work on view evokes a specific milieu of terror, ranging from the gory to the psychological. The result is a rogue’s gallery of scenes and characters stripped from their setting: Monsters with no movie, ghosts with no story, houses haunted by nothing discernible, but haunted nonetheless.

Tales from the Crypt will open alongside Some Bats, a solo show of paintings by Christopher Graham, guest-curated by Levi Gentry in Nine’s project space.

"Some Bats", a solo show of paintings by Christopher Graham, guest-curated by Levi Gentry in Nine’s project space opens October 9th at Curmudgeon.

From Christopher Graham and Levi Gentry:

Bats can hardly see or be seen.

Bats’ nocturnal nature makes them mysterious to people. The whole nighttime thing additionally makes them gothic and spooky. Some of them eat fruit, bugs and blood. They have funny faces, like French Bulldogs with wings.

Culturally they are ubiquitous and tend to lay low. Vampires even turn into bats to evade capture. The Count from Sesame Street hangs amongst a whole crew of bats. Stellaluna proved that bats love hanging upside down with any and everyone. Meatloaf sang about leaving “like a bat out of hell”. And then, of course, there’s Batman, who disguises himself as a bat to protect Gotham from colorful supervillains.

Thomas Nagel’s What Is It Like to Be a Bat provided continued inspiration, as he posited that no one would ever truly know what it was like to be a bat. Most bats use echolocation to survive. As one imagines what it would be like to echolocate, they may picture a radial field of curved lines emanating from the bat’s head like a bullseye or the rings inside a log or the cross section of a gobstopper. Of course, bats do not imagine it this way. We may have some idea of bat life in our minds, but ultimately our entire understanding of being a bat can only be related to the human experience.

Viewing painting is often informed by our experience as human beings; paintings of bats are no different.

From Christopher (me):

On view at Curmudgeon/Nine's project space in New York City from October 9th- to October 27th, reception October 9th. It's my first time showing work in the city in maybe over 8 years. Come say hi!

Big thank you to Levi Gentry for organizing the show and for visiting my studio in Boyle Heights over the summer. So many good discussions, complete with a burrito run to Al and Bea's.

Thanks to Curmudgeon for having me.

Bodiless Light I|
Decals of hand-woven photographs in mirrorized slumped glass, neon (argon), hardware, electrical wiring, transformer
Dimensions variable (neon length 58 in, slumped glass: 16.5 x 11.5 x 2.5 in)
2026

In Bodiless Light and related series, a pair of images from two distant places are first hand-woven by the artist, rephotographed, and fused into slumped glass. Lee begins by hand-weaving spliced photographs from her personal archive, often referencing her grandfather’s funeral, which she was unable to attend, alongside moments when she experienced the transient nature of time, such as gazing into a reflection of light entering her residency studio in Connecticut. The work brings the two images together in an attempt to fold ungraspable moments and experiences into a single surface and dimension. Through this layered process, Lee questions what it means to exist with or without a body, particularly in an age so reliant on digitally mediated interaction. Probing the shifting relationship between being, memory, and spatiotemporal perception, neon punctures the mirrorized slumped glass, which reflects its surroundings. Lee uses neon, subtle in Bodiless Light II, as a way to draw in space with light, considering the connections between screens and electricity, the material reality of the body and screen, and the visibility and invisibility of the physical and virtual realms.

Gabriella Gungon Lopez is a visual artist and educator working across drawing, moving image, and installation. Using abstraction as a form of articulation, she organizes partial information into provisional spatial and temporal structures. Her work considers how images can hold unresolved experience while providing methods for rebuilding orientation under unstable conditions. She holds a BFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University and is an MFA candidate in Visual Arts at Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts.
