SPECIALIST PICK | "I like this poster for a number of reasons. One aspect of the poster market that constantly amazes me and keeps me so engaged is that, even after over 30 years in the business, I still encounter images I have never seen before. This is one of those images. And it is even more pronounced in this instance because Leyendecker is such a famous artist that I would have imagined his oeuvre of graphic work would have been thoroughly codified by now, but no. Perhaps this is because, being from 1910, this poster slips between the cracks of standard World War One posters. The image was originally a painting entitled "The Making of a Man-o'-Warsman," which is also the title of one of the brochures the poster mentions. The original painting has not been located.

Leyendecker's work is also known for its queer coding. Leyendecker, who was gay in an era when homosexuality was not approved of or accepted, worked figures and imagery into his illustrations in a manner that didn't register with the heteronormative audiences and was universally accepted, admired and copied." — Nicholas D. Lowry, Swann President and Director of Vintage Posters

The arc of history is an amazing thing. This story begins In 1932 when my father was born. That story reached a tremendous milestone this week in Prague with the laying of Stolpersteins commemorating my father, his brother John and parents Elenora and Otto (my grandparents) who had to flee Czechoslovakia in 1939, after the Nazi invasion. The ceremony was attended by 12 family members of all generations- a victorious and proud turnout- the living antithesis of the intended extermination. It was a powerful and poignant event.

I have an exceptional family of whom I am inordinately proud. And spending time with them in Prague was an incredible, maybe once in a lifetime, event.

Our great thanks to our friends at @primeroscondom and #martinsmok who have been instrumental in helping us to track our family history and in making this reunion happen. taken in Prague, Czech Republic by @nicholowry

Nicholas D. Lowry discusses Cleveland's Kokoon Arts Club.

The Kokoon Club was founded in 1911 by young artists inspired by the Dadaist movement and similar avant-garde organizations in Europe. The name Kokoon derives from "the lowly cocoon . . . forerunner of the beautiful butterfly in hope that from this small beginning something of beauty should develop and emerge." The yearly costume balls were originally intended as fundraising events, but turned into "notorious events that kept the Kokoon Club in the spotlight well into the 1930s." "For just one night a year Cleveland forgot that it was Cleveland and became a sort of bacchanalic festival of color, excitement, and just enough eroticism to give it the flavor of an exotic faraway place-preferably one with relaxed morals-like the Latin Quarter of Paris, the Sea Palace of Neptune, the Pharaoh's court in ancient Egypt, or the Persia of the Arabian Nights" (Kokoon p. 1). Each poster also served as an invitation to the event, some inscribed with the name of the invitee.
