SPECIALIST PICK | "I like this poster for a number of reasons. One aspect of the poster market that constantly amazes me and keeps me so engaged is that, even after over 30 years in the business, I still encounter images I have never seen before. This is one of those images. And it is even more pronounced in this instance because Leyendecker is such a famous artist that I would have imagined his oeuvre of graphic work would have been thoroughly codified by now, but no. Perhaps this is because, being from 1910, this poster slips between the cracks of standard World War One posters. The image was originally a painting entitled "The Making of a Man-o'-Warsman," which is also the title of one of the brochures the poster mentions. The original painting has not been located. ⁠⁠Leyendecker's work is also known for its queer coding. Leyendecker, who was gay in an era when homosexuality was not approved of or accepted, worked figures and imagery into his illustrations in a manner that didn't register with the heteronormative audiences and was universally accepted, admired and copied." — Nicholas D. We love diaries here in the Swann Americana department, and the best one in this week's Americana sale was written during the French and Indian War in 1756. The author was a young doctor named Thomas Weld, who describes his journey from Boston to the frontier north of Albany. He describes seeing the bodies of deserters hanging from gallows; soldiers killed by tomahawk or scalping by French-allied Indians; the exploits of the yet-unknown ranger scout Robert Rogers; and dining upon a "stew pye made of a rattlesnake." Weld's nephew mentioned this diary in an 1812 book; it's been off the radar of historians and in private hands with unbroken provenance ever since.⁠⁠Learn more about lot 154 and register to bid at the link in our bio. by @swanngalleries

The top lot in the American Revolution section of this week's Americana auction is a group of papers of the British officer Richard M. St. George. It starts with his 1776 letter to King George, begging for a commission to serve in Boston to help squash "the unnatural rebellion prevailing in America." He was soon shot in the head at the battle of Germantown, described in two doctor's letters which are not for the faint of heart. The papers last appeared at auction in 1930, tucked into a book from the library of a famous golf course designer, and remained in the same family for many decades until sent to Swann for this auction.⁠⁠Learn more about lto 24 at the link in our bio. by @swanngalleries

Happy first day of Summer ☀️🏖️😎⁠⁠Pictured here is Ruth A. Anderson's 'Beach Scene,' oil on canvas, circa 1920. Sold in March for $27,940.⁠⁠After studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and later in Europe and North Africa with William Merritt Chase, Ruth Alice Anderson was primarily based in Baltimore, Maryland. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1914 at the W.E. Jones Gallery in Baltimore, and she soon became a well-known artist, also exhibiting her work in New York, Massachusetts, and in her hometown of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Anderson summered in Gloucester with her aunt, Esther Groome, and the two artists regularly exhibited their work there. Despite marrying Samuel B. Temple, who came from Boston, in 1918, Anderson continued to paint and exhibit her work nationally. Anderson's use of color, especially in her later work, has been compared to that of the French Post-Impressionist painters. Though Anderson was a very successful and widely exhibited artist, her career was almost forgotten in the years following her death, until the Adams Davidson Galleries arranged a travelling retrospective of her work in 1972, followed by another larger retrospective in 1982 at the Dent Collection in Washington, D.C., organized by Joyce and Harry Farr. by @swanngalleries
